Derek was a little startled at the sudden hug and rush of emotion, though he caught her and tentatively patted her back soothingly, still a tad bit stunned at the force of her gratitude but glad he could help and make someone feel so thankful.
It felt like she struggled out of sleep this time, and she opened her eyes to see Derek leaving the room. There was a weight at her back suggesting Isaac was still asleep. Summer blinked drowsily and swam to the edge of the bed, padding after Derek to perch in the kitchen. The too-big robe dragged around her feet.
Derek had woken with a rumbling stomach and slipped out of bed. He heard Summer behind him as he went down the stairs to start coffee. Isaac wouldn’t be far behind and he grinned. Isaac was always hungry when he woke up too. “You want a cup of coffee?” Derek asked as he was getting his mug, turning to look at her in the comically big robe.
She frowned, unsure. She couldn’t remember if she liked coffee or not. Taking the mug from him, she peered into it, shrugging helplessly. She paid careful attention to how he made the coffee, handing the mug back. It smelled good, anyway. She stole the mug again after he filled it, and Isaac appeared, sleep-tousled, just in time to see her make a face and shove the mug at Derek.
