The car wasn’t that far away. She was pretty sure she could hobble over to it — “You can put me down now. I don’t think you can hold me while I’m driving, chere.” She leaned on him, though, with a sigh of relief, despite the ache in her ankle. She just sat for a moment after getting in the car, not even putting the key in the ignition. “I don’t understand,” she said, limply, staring at the wheel.

“I just…I just want to hold you for a bit longer.” He sighed deeply in protest and pressed his lips to her cheek, then lowering her to the ground and holding her upright. As he helped her into the car, he flinched and ducked his head, kneading his fingers into the legs of his trousers. “I…what…what don’t you…I don’t know what to say, Summer…”

She reached out and put a hand over his, forcing it to be still. “I don’t understand /any/ of this. Who /were/ those people? Are you all werewolves? Were you — why do you all have different colour eyes?” She leaned forward, resting her head on the wheel, and made herself take a deep breath. “Do you — need to be out there with them? Because it’s the full moon?”
