No, I came here to find the book that will tell me what this stuff is! [She flung a handful of glittering black powder at him — mountain ash, though she didn’t know that.] I wasn’t careful enough, I guess, or he’s getting bolder. I thought I’d lost him a few streets ago and I was safe for the rest of the day.

[Summer pressed her lips together, looked down at her hands, then back up at Isaac.] If you’re going to let him in, pull the fire alarm first. I don’t want anyone else getting hurt if I have to do this.

[He watched it mist through the air like he was having an out of body experience—

He knew the effects of drinking it, inhaling it—small, nonlethal amounts, but the hallucinations weren’t fun. Touching it, though, was like a pepper burn that sparked into fire, and even that small amount was enough to draw the wolf out, snarling and protective. The door shoved against his back and he pushed into it, focusing on the pressure against his shoulders instead of the claws raking inside his body, the gold rising to his eyes.] Put that away—

[Shit. Shit, shit, shit, and shit again.]

[She shot to her feet, half in shock at the change that had come over him, and half in shock that he recognised the powder.] /What is it/? [Her voice snapped with tension. She forgot about the hunter on the other side of the door.] Tell me what it is!

I’m being hunted. Thought that was obvious. [She kept her voice low, though it was clear he knew where she was.] I don’t know why. [Well, she did, sort of.]

[Through the door, a male voice, and the pressure slackened.] Give her to me and nobody has to get hurt.

[Hissing.] He’s lying. I don’t think he wants to kill me but whatever he wants, someone is going to get hurt.

—Like bounty hunter? And you came to hide in a high school?

[Like there weren’t enough deaths in Beacon Hills already. Isaac eyed her incredulously and turned to brace his back against the door, glowering at the redhead.] Not much for negotiations, are you?

[The hunter ignored the sound of the door, ignored the students streaming past. To her, his mind was a blank in the surround. He came down the hall, passing like a ghost among the students, and paused outside the door. Tested it, once, twice.

Summer hardly breathed, crouched by the teacher’s desk and eyes fixed on the boy. Who, despite his sarcasm, was bracing the door closed with his own body. Her heartbeat rattled in her ears, adrenaline-induced nausea thick in her throat.

The hunter set his shoulder to the door and shoved.]

[The force of impact jarred him a little, temple smacking into the door. If this was another supernat, he was leaving town, he swore.

Scowling, he pressed his frame more firmly into the door, sneakers catching on the shiny linoleum and providing the foothold he needed to use his strength. The door rattled, but didn’t budge much—if at all.

Throwing a glance over his shoulder, Isaac had half a mind to show his teeth.] You wanna tell me what the fuck I’m getting dragged into?
