“You really think so?”

Summer held herself very still atop him, mind turned to the pressure of them together. Only her mouth worked, nipping at his lip where he’d bitten it, and she whimpered slightly. If she moved just a little, or he did, he would slip inside her, and a small voice at the back of her mind shouted distantly that they might want to pause briefly before going that far.

Isaac continued kissing her, holding her close before sighing and pulling away to look at her. “Hang on,” he murmured, slipping out from under her and grabbing his jeans from the floor. He fished his wallet out of the back pocket and pulled out a condom. He climbed back on the bed and tore the package open with his teeth. Isaac smiled and rolled it on before hovering over her again and pressing their lips together.

Summer watched his every movement in breathless, yearning silence. When he climbed back atop her, she held on to his shoulders and hooked one knee over his hip. In between kisses, she said, face burning, “Am I supposed to do anything now?”

She still couldn’t think what to say. Captive. For a month. Oddly, her mind fixed on the fact that it also meant a month’s absence from school — and then something seemed to click.

“Why did no one know to tell me?” There was still that colourless clarity in her voice. “Am I a secret, Isaac? A shame? You wanted — ” She cut short, to try to reimpose the lack of emotion that shattered the last word. “You didn’t want to be a fling to me, so what am I to you, then?”

And then her throat closed up with incipient tears, and she couldn’t say anything more.

Isaac looked down and frowned. “It’s not you, Summer,” he said, looking up at her and walking over to her. He hesitantly reached out for her hand. “They’re my pack, yeah, but they aren’t really my friends. I don’t really have friends,” he said, frowning and looking at her. “I didn’t tell them because it just… I don’t talk about relationships or anything with them,” he said, swallowing and looking her over.

Summer took his hand, blinking. Tears slipped down her face, and she smeared them away with her free hand, though they kept falling. Moving to bury her face against his shoulder, she mumbled, “I thought you had left me. That I had driven you away.”

Rubbing at his neck, Jesse spat a swear word and stumbled back. “You’ll regret this. I warned you. She’ll ruin you and use you and break you and you’ll beg her for it.” The door stood open as he backed away and left.

Summer swallowed hard, looking down at the cat. She could hear Jesse striding away, anger rolling off him like a cloud, and couldn’t look up at Isaac.

Isaac rolled his eyes, not buying the bullshit for a second. He closed the door behind Jesse and leaned against the door. “Well… He was a dick,” he said matter-of-factly before frowning at her. “Hey…” He walked up to her and tilted her chin up, making her look at him. “Summer… You okay?” he asked, frowning and looking her over.

Her fingers curled into the cat’s fur, holding for comfort now and not to restrain. “I loved him,” she said softly. “Still love him. I thought he loved me.” She had to swallow. “He did. I don’t know — he — I don’t — ” Words deserted her. After a long moment, she managed, “He’s not wrong. I’m a horrible person.”

“You really think so?”

She didn’t even notice, too absorbed in the sensations under her hand. She added a gentle twist at the top of each stroke, and then looked up to see him biting his lip so hard it nearly bled. So she leaned up to brush her mouth to his and whispered, “Don’t do that, it’s my job.” Her face felt hot at the awkward way she felt she said it.

Isaac laughed a little and leaned forward enough to capture her lips in a kiss. “Yes ma’am,” he said teasingly, bringing his hand up to cup her face and deepen the kiss. Isaac shifted, pulling her on top of his lap and resting his free hand on her waist, pressing her against him.

Summer held herself very still atop him, mind turned to the pressure of them together. Only her mouth worked, nipping at his lip where he’d bitten it, and she whimpered slightly. When someone knocked on the door, Helios padded over to it, nose working, and sneezed at whatever he was smelling. Summer frowned, rolling off the couch, and pulled the door open …

… and froze.

“Isaac,” she said finally. “I — hi.”

Isaac swallowed and stared at her, looking her over before clearing his throat. “…Hi,” he said, smiling a little and running a hand through his hair. “If… You want me to just leave and never come back, I can do that. Just say so. I just… Wanted to explain. I don’t really expect you to forgive me or anything…” he rambled.

She opened her mouth, closed it, opened it again. “If there’s going to be an explanation, I guess you can come in.” Her voice was toneless, pitched slightly higher with the crystalline, frozen state of her emotions.

She wanted to say, sharp and hard and with all the worry of the last month, ‘Where the hell have you been?!’ She wanted to take the sleepless nights and heartsick worry and soul-wrenching belief in her own responsibility for his absence and rub his nose in it. But she didn’t. Couldn’t, really; the shock of seeing him again dammed up all the words.

All she could do was step to one side of the door and gently set her ereader down and wait.

Isaac sucked in a deep breath before letting it out slowly. He’d been gone a month with absolutely no explanation… and now he was back. He was most definitely going to be murdered brutally for leaving so abruptly. Isaac swallowed before knocking on the door in front of him and taking a step back.

When someone knocked on the door, Helios padded over to it, nose working, and sneezed at whatever he was smelling. Summer frowned, rolling off the couch, and pulled the door open …

… and froze.

“Isaac,” she said finally. “I — hi.”

“Isaac! Isaac, put him down!” Summer screamed. She didn’t dare move, because the cat would immediately bolt out the door. As it was, it had its ears flat to its head.

Jesse had his hand wrapped around Isaac’s wrist. His face was warped into a sneer, and he hissed, “What’d she promise you? What’d she do to you? You’re a slave and you can’t even see it.” Twisting fruitlessly, he glared at Summer. “Witch!”

Isaac looked back at Summer and reluctantly set him down. “I’m not a slave.” Alright, technically he was actually Summer’s slave for the next twenty-four hours, but that wasn’t the point. “I wasn’t promised anything to kick your ass out. You’ve just managed to piss me off that much,” he said, narrowing his eyes at him before taking a step back and crossing his arms. “Leave. Now. And don’t come back.”

Rubbing at his neck, Jesse spat a swear word and stumbled back. “You’ll regret this. I warned you. She’ll ruin you and use you and break you and you’ll beg her for it.” The door stood open as he backed away and left.

“You really think so?”

“I’ll take it out in trade,” Summer replied absently, focused on the feel of the flesh under her hand, the way he shifted and moaned. She closed her fingers around him, stroking harder. “If you promise to be more careful next time.” It was strange, the heat and softness — she hadn’t expected bad literary descriptions to be quite so apt. Velvet over steel.

Isaac closed his eyes and shuddered beneath her touch. He was pleasantly surprised to hear her certainty about a next time and smiled as his head tilted back. “Mmm… Wow. That’s… really good…” he mumbled, arching up into her hand and biting his lip a little too hard.
