I really just love pro-life logic.

Why help those who have been born when we can stick our noses into other people’s private health care matters? Lets try to get them to keep their pregnancies! We can go back to ignoring them after they give birth.

How about we start with the 397,000 in foster care in the U.S. and give them loving, permanent homes? x

Or the 1.5 million homeless children in america? X

Or the 16.2 million children who are going hungry in america? X

Or the 18,900,000 children who are refuges, running from violence in their homelands? X

Or the 6 million children in the U.S. alone who are abused each year? X

Or the 1.2 million children who are trafficked, sold as slaves, usually sexual slaves, each year? X

Oh, no, let’s start with the non-sentient fetuses that can’t feel pain, or know what’s going on. 

Let’s ignore these millions and millions of living, breathing children who are living through hell right now.

But, anyway. There is no fucking hate here, for anyone. Do not hate someone simply for something they cannot change. Cisgendered, transgendered, asexual, heterosexual, homosexual, pansexual, abled, disabled, Catholic, Muslim, atheist, agnostic, THERE IS NO FUCKING NEED.

What you are saying when you say ‘fucking cis people tho’ is actually just ‘fucking dickhead people tho’. To which you, dear anon, fall into the category of.

What is the point hating someone for something they are, most likely, born with? People who feel in the wrong sex body, people whose bodies don’t work well, people who like the same bodied people as them, it’s not something anyone decided one day that ‘actually, I want to be like them’. You are some dislike for someone who has no choice on the matter because, actually, this is who they fucking are, and no shitty piece of disgustingly uttered words will change that.

You might as well swear at the Himalayas for being too fucking tall. It. will. do. nothing.

But this is Tumblr, this is the world. There are +does a quick research+ probably 30 million-50 million people on this website. There are 7 billion people upon this little planet. That’s an awful number of people and, no, you are never going to get everybody to like each other. Even in a group of twenty or so people, there will be dissent. It’s human nature, it’s the way it works.

And when enough people don’t like something, it becomes a hatred.

And enough hatred becomes violence.

And those who choose to violently act against another person who has thoughts, feelings, dreams, emotions, wants, dislikes, loves, fingers, toes, eyes, genitalia (whether any of these work or whatever), hair in various places, that you, dear human being, are an arse hole. 

Do not hate people for who they are. Do not hate people for a colour they couldn’t choose in the womb, or a love that is still as strong no matter whether the receiver is a boy, girl, neutral, transgender. Do not hate people because their bodies are degrading faster than your own, or their mind is wired to a different gear as yours. 

They didn’t choose to be this way, whether for better or for worse.

Instead, hate those that actively choose to be arseholes. Hate the Hitlers, the Putins, the Stalins. Hate those who have a question and answer it with the most violent answer possible. Hate those who wish harm on another, because one day that hate could change with the wind and swing towards you, and you will find out how unpleasant this bullshit can be if you’re the one showered in hate. 

Do not be ashamed if you don’t like something. If two girls kissing creeps you out, or a man having an epileptic fit makes you scared of how violent our bodies can be when they turn on us. There are enough people in the world to help those you do not like and thus life can be wonderful for everyone.

But do not, ever, strike out at someone because you do not like their lifestyles. 

Do not ever harm someone in the name of hate because then you become that dickwad. You are not a ‘saviour of the human race’. Your shitty words are not ‘just saying what everyone is thinking’. 

You are a cunt, and there is no simpler word for it.

Accept, forget, forgive. We’re all capable of it. Feel free to say you don’t like something, but in a rational, empathic sense, as an atheist might to a Christian. There is no reason why you cannot.

Accept other people are not of the same mind as you.

Forget you saw it.

And forgive yourself your deeper feelings for why it is so horrific to you. 

And then you can carry on with your life, and if everyone should do that, maybe there’ll be no need to have such vast communities like this split up by simple, meaningless labels.

We’re all people. Lets act like it, and not the animals we are now.))

Man stabbed during violence as ‘Polish neo-Nazis’ storm Tottenham music festival

A 24-year-old man was stabbed during the violence after a neo-Nazi group disrupted a free Music Day festival of around 150 people in Markfield Park. Anti-fascist campaigners said up to 40 neo-Nazis had planned an event of their own nearby but stormed the family music event and stabbed a Jewish man.

Video footage of the clashes show a single female police officer at the scene as thugs hurl missiles, light fires and hurl abuse.

Witness Oz Katerji, a journalist, tweeted: “About 150 of us were having a party in Markfield Park in Tottenham, Neo-nazi polish fascists turn up, full scale riot operation.

“Unprovoked assault at a licensed event, children present, maybe about 10-20 skins turned up and started a riot,” he added.

Haringey Green Party claimed the attack was carried out by members of the Zjednoczeni Emigranci (ZE) fascist group, which is alleged to have ties to football hooliganism and neo-Nazism in Poland.

A statement from the Greens said: “Taking the peaceful community event by surprise, ZE launched an unprovoked attack, hurling verbal abuse at locals, intimidating the children and families that were present, before turning to physical violence. Footage from the community event shows ZE launching rocks and flares at the crowd.”

Police confirmed a man was taken to hospital with stab wounds but said his condition is not believed to be serious. Nobody has been arrested in connection with the stabbing.

A Polish man from Surrey has been charged with racially and religiously aggravated common assault and has been bailed to appear in court in July. Another man, aged 22, was arrested for racially aggravated common assault after a man’s kippah was pushed from his head, according to police.

A spokesman said: “Police were called at approximately 21:10hrs on Saturday, 21 June to a disturbance at Markfield Recreation Ground, N15.

“Officers attended the location. A 24-year-old man was found suffering from a stab wound. He was taken by London Ambulance Service to an east London hospital where his condition is not believed to be serious. Officers from Haringey CID are investigating.”

But banning guns completely will end violence!

Most mass murderers do not go from zero to 60. Rodger made escalating assaults on women (splashing coffee on them, attempting to shove them off a ledge) before his killing spree. Both Cho and Justin-Jinich’s murderer harassed women before they killed anyone. When such acts go unnoticed and unpunished — because we expect men to harass women, and it’s not outrageous or even noteworthy when they do — they can become stepping-stones to more conspicuous and less socially acceptable acts of violence.

Interesting to note that while a history of animal cruelty is widely accepted to be a link with becoming a serial killer, the link between cruelty towards women and killing women is still up for debate. If a guy abuses a cat and then shoots women we say “we should have seen it coming that guy was nuts”, but if abuses women and then shoots women we say “we had no way of seeing it coming that guy was a perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human”.

There Have Been 74 School Shootings in the U.S. Since Sandy Hook

Yesterday morning, a gunman opened fire at a high school in Troutdale, Oregon, killing one and injuring many. This marks the 74th school shooting to occur in the United States since 26 people (20 of them children) were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, CT. The average number of school shootings in America, according to data collected by Everytown for Gun Safety, is now 1.37 per week.

There is something so very wrong with this picture, yet attempts to regulate and limit gun ownership are blocked at every turn.  This isn’t about the Second Amendment, no matter what the National Rifle Association and the right wing gun nuts scream.  It’s about the lack of licensing (though you need one to drive a car) and the lack of training (though you need it to drive a car), and the lack of intelligent discussion instead of screaming.  Instead we have “open carry” and “stand your ground.” 

Who will die next?

Question: Is the licensing for /use/ of a gun, or simple ownership? You don’t have to have a licence to buy a car, to have a car in your name — only to drive it. To use it. Vehicle training isn’t about the moral aspects of driving, either; it’s about the safety aspects.

Safety training in gun usage won’t prevent shootings. It won’t prevent “joyriding” with household guns. Licensing won’t prevent shootings by people who steal, illegally purchase, or borrow guns. It restricts law-abiding people who might be in a position to prevent shootings, or curtail them.

The emotional, instinctive desire to control guns is understandable — but as the UCSB killings prove, that’s not the solution. That person started killing with a knife, but I don’t see anyone calling for greater restrictions on knives, or training.

Rather than be focused on the object of destruction, can we look at what pushes people into committing these acts? Is there a common denominator between the killers in these shootings? Is there something we can change about schooling, about society, that would make a greater difference?

Reading through the tweets on the #yesallwomen hashtag is heartbreaking, illuminating and frustrating all at the same time. 

And if you’re a woman, you’ll be nodding along to nine out of 10 of them.

The hashtag started after it was revealed that 22-year-old Elliot Rodger, lead suspect in the Isla Vista shooting, had shared extremely disturbing and misogynistic views in a video posted shortly before the attack.

Instead of flooding the internet with Rodger-specific fury, Twitter took the discussion to the next level and remind the world that sexism is still very much present across society, and #YesAllWomen experience it.

Among those tweets were many honest and confronting admissions of sexism from female scientists, students and communicators.

This isn’t the first time the issue of misogyny in science has been brought up, but it’s always sad and shocking to see certain opinions persist when females have come such a long way in the field.

As ScienceAlert is staffed almost entirely by women, we though we’d add a few of our own:

Because only 44 out of 835 Nobel Prize laureates are women.

Because senior scientists would still rather hire males, and pay them more.

Because people are still shocked when we tell them ScienceAlert is run by women.

Because that last tweet I screenshotted, via Hannah Hart, really hits home for myself and so many women I’ve talked to over the last few days [much less ever] when it comes to pointing out sexism in general, especially within the STEM world.
