“I think there’s a simple solution to that. I don’t stay anywhere that doesn’t allow me to take my cats with me. They can simply stay at the hotel room. And, I know your job is important to you, but, for the record, what I make could support the both of us and all the cats fairly easily.” He sounded like he was bragging. And he kinda was to some extent. Robert placed a kiss atop of Summer’s head.

“But, if that doesn’t interest you, then by all means, keep your job and come when you can. As long as I can see you, it won’t hurt my feelings all that much.”

“I need to think about it, okay?” It wasn’t just her regular job. There were things that she’d need to rearrange if she didn’t have a fixed address as much. “It’s really tempting. Just give me a couple weeks, okay. You really can just text me and ask me to come see you.”

“Take the time you need. By that point, I’ll probably be back home in California, but until then, I’ll keep in mind that I can simply pick up the phone and give you a text. I don’t know why I forget about that.” Truth be told, between filming and then relaxing, along with interacting with the fans, Robert wouldn’t think about it. Not immediately, anyway.

“Then … ” She stopped. “Will you want me there when you go home?”

“That’s what I was hoping.” Like he’d leave her behind completely. That wasn’t something he was likely to do. “Like you said, though. Take the time to think about it, and let me know what you think.”

A cacophony of thoughts rattled in Summer’s head, all of them trying to jump out of her mouth at once. She opened her mouth, closed it, opened it again.

“I feel like I’ve missed something here. Stop me if I’m jumping to conclusions here, but it sounds like,” she paused, trying to still the butterflies doing mad tangos in her middle, “like you’re asking me to move in with you. Basically.” She stepped back a little, trying to look at his face. “It’s a bit … I mean, this is just the first time we’ve kissed. So, you know, the signals are very mixed. Robert?”

Summer’s eyes went huge. “You … do? You do.” She squeezed him, smiling shakily and blushing hard. “Oh, Robert. I wish you could. I have a job, though. I have to be in New York sometimes. I can’t always telecommute.” It was upsetting, having to crush his hopes, and her own, but her job was important to her just like his was to him. “And who would take care of my cats?”

She chewed on her lip, trying to think of something she could offer him. “I can come visit you a lot, though. Getting places isn’t a problem. You just have to ask me.”

“Days aren’t so hard. Weeks are hard.” Summer’s voice was muffled against his shirt. “Tell me you miss me. Tell me you want to see me.” She looked up at his face, resting his chin on his chest. “Love you.”

“I want to see you every minute I’m away. I just quell the feeling so I can focus on the job at hand.” It felt rude, it sounded rude, but truthfully, it helped him out. Unwanted emotions on set weren’t all that valuable and usually caused more harm than good. “That’s why I’m thinking that maybe I should just take you with me when I leave. I did it before with my ex-wife, and I still do it with Indio.”

“I would if I’d seen you any time in the last month. As it is, I’ve gotta get what I can of your presence before you have to go back to work.” She sighed a little and pressed her face to his chest. “I only mind because I miss you.”

“You knew the dangers of dating someone who’s as busy with their work as I am. There are going to be times where you won’t see me for days at a time.” Even though he knew it was true, Robert couldn’t hide the feeling he had inside. How much he hated the fact he was away for so long at a time. “So, I can understand why you have to take the chances you can get.”

“I know you didn’t, but I did.” Considering it was the best word he could think of, and he was trying to lighten the mood. “You’d have to be training for quite some time not to fall on your ass when falling off a bike. Makes you feel any better, I don’t fall correctly all the time.” What he didn’t mention was it wasn’t often. “Do I need to mention the injured ankle I got filming?” Course, right as he finished speaking, a laugh escaped him at Summer’s antics. Hey, she was only playing along with what he started.

“Would have been different if I’d fallen on my ass,” she muttered, looking at her hands again. She lifted her leg, flexing the knee, and winced slightly. “Well, I think I can keep going but maybe we better not ride all over after all. I’m sorry.” Gingerly, she put her hands down to push herself up. “Was there anything you wanted to do?”

After all the trouble he had gone through to get the bike. It really wasn’t any trouble, but this could have gone over differently. “… If I’m honest with you, I really didn’t give all this much thought. What with my mind on other things. So, I don’t really have any backup ideas.” That just sounded really sad. Maybe there was something he could think of on the draw. Sadly, nothing was really coming to him. “I don’t know if you had any other ideas, but it looks like I’m out.”

“I’m really sorry.” Summer hung her head, fumbling at the handlebars of her bike to right it. Thoughtlessly, she wiped her hands on her skirt, then cursed. “Dammit. I just really suck today.” She blinked, and a tear rolled down her face. She swiped at it impatiently. “Maybe I better just … look, you want to just come over to my place and watch a movie?”

Hey, it could be worse. “I guess that’s something we could do. Even after I went through the trouble of actually getting a bike…” Not that it really bothered him. Worse things could have happened than that. Robert ran a hand through his hair, debating whether he should bring the bike back now or not. He could use it to get to her place, couldn’t he? Eh, he’d have to wait and see.

“No, it’s okay, you should ride it to my place.” Summer brushed her fingertips over the heel of one hand, dislodging some grit and wincing. “Does the fact that I have cats to adore you make up for my stupidity?” Once again she swung her leg over the bike, balancing on one foot while she waited for Robert to mount up.

The comment was unexpected, but Robert didn’t seem all too phased about it. “I’m aware there is. You really don’t take a break about it, do you?”

“You said you didn’t want to rush,” she pointed out. “I did go for it, remember, and you turned me down.” She bit at her lip. “Does that mean I can have a kiss now?”

Now he was losing his mind. His old age must be catching up with him. “Yes, yes I did. I’m thinking I’m starting to lose my mind, or something along those lines.” The actor hummed to himself for a moment before replying. “I don’t see why not.” Without waiting for a response, he leaned forward, capturing Summer’s lips in a small kiss; not too quick, or too passionate, just something good to start off with to at least express his feelings correctly.

Summer tried to chase his mouth for a second when he pulled away, before dropping back off her toes. She gave him a shy, very pleased smile, and wormed her way into his arms.

“I bet you didn’t expect that until later. I think it was about damn time. I just think we were both at such a distance- no, wait, that was my fault actually. Forget I said that.” With Summer sneaking herself into his arms, Robert wrapped them around her, a small smile on his face.

“Sometimes you talk too much,” she said complacently. “There are better things to do with your mouth, as you’ve discovered.”

The comment was unexpected, but Robert didn’t seem all too phased about it. “I’m aware there is. You really don’t take a break about it, do you?”
