Summer’s last statement got an eyebrow raise from the actor. What could she possibly tell him now that he needed to know? Robert tilted his head a bit in response. “And what could that possibly be? I thought we were done with the secrets? I mean, sure, the excitement of learning something new is great but… I dunno. Just thought we were done for now.”

“It’s not … my secret to keep, this one. Not just mine. Your movies … they’re a little more real than you know. You know that I can know what you’re feeling, but I don’t just … it’s …” She stumbled, hesitated. “There are places where what I can do is useful. Easing panic. Conveying calm. Noticing trouble. Sometimes I have to go quickly.”

“… Okay.” Honestly, Robert wasn’t sure what else to really say. He knew where she was going with it, but was it worth keeping it secret, even if she shouldn’t? Not like it wasn’t all that surprising that a thing such as heroes existed in real life. “I know what you’re talking about, and honestly, that doesn’t bother me.”

That was easier than she’d expected. Summer sighed in relief. “You’re amazing, you know that?” She flung her arms around his neck and kissed him. “I have to arrange a few things, and then I’ll go anywhere you want me.”

At hearing there were two more, Robert’s interest seemed to pique a bit. Hey, he did love cats. He watched as Summer lured them all out—or well most of them—and was impressed at the variety of breeds and colors. “So just four then? See, if this were me, I’d have more than four. But I try to keep a good limit. Though the temptation is unbelievable.” Robert continued to watch Summer, wanting to interact with the cats himself, but seeming to keep his distance, more to give the cats the chance to get used to him first before he even tried to pet them, at the very least.

“This is a limited space,” she pointed out. “A two bedroom apartment is already an extravagance for New York City without overcrowding what are essentially solitary animals.” Another few treats scattered about brought all the cats to her feet, and she pushed Helios back a little, then bodily picked him up just before he stole a treat right from under the tabby’s nose.

“Now Helios, you had your share, you fat greedy furball. Come say hi to Robert.” She half-held the limp heap of fur out to the actor. Helios fixed his blue eyes on Robert’s dark ones and stuck out a paw, just as Phoebe came up from behind and began to inspect his shoes.

Summer laughed. “You must be made of catnip. Here.” Without waiting for an answer, she unloaded Helios into his arms. “I’m going to go wash these scrapes. I’ll be right back.” She disappeared through a doorway half down the hall.

“I own two cats, so I wouldn’t deny that I might smell like catnip. Or other cats. That usually attracts attention.” Even with the action so sudden, Robert got a firm hold on Helios, his attention focused solely on the cat, before turning to the other at his feet for a moment. Unwilling to move, Robert stood there, using a hand to pet Helios as it was kind of hard for him to help himself. “I see why you’re a greedy furball. You seem bigger than the others.” Making sure Phoebe wasn’t in his walking path, Robert eventually made his way to the living area, Helios still in hand. “You know, I might just steal you away for a day or two.”

Helios snuggled up against Robert’s chest, blue eyes blinking sleepily and starting to purr. Phoebe circled around, waiting until Robert sat down before she leaped up next to him, peering inquisitively for a place to sit. The other two quartered the floor for more treats, ears pricking up alertly when Summer emerged from the bathroom.

“I see you’ve been has’d. Kitty has laid claim to you,” she commented, smiling. “He’s going to leave fur on your nice clothes.”

Robert followed Summer without another word, though a smile emerged on his face at the snippet about his body guards. Thankfully, they didn’t follow him around all the time. Especially when he asked for a privacy day to himself. Her next comment about the condition of her apartment, after they had parked and locked the bikes, really didn’t phase him. If it weren’t for the fact he was out all the time, he probably would have one hell of a mess in his own house.

Upon peering inside the now open apartment, it didn’t take Robert long to locate two cats. And they caused the smile in his face to widen. “Are these the only two, or are there more hiding to make my day? Also, I’m not the least bit nuts. Well… Okay, maybe a little.”

“No, there’s two more. Kronos may refuse to put in an appearance; he and Doc are less social than Phoebe and Helios.” Summer crouched down and and snapped her fingers for Doc, who stopped in the doorway, sat down tidily, and began to wash a paw. “See? Bein’ a little shit, yes you are,” she cooed.

“I’ll cast summon cat and see if that works.” She picked up a crinkly bag and opened it, gaining the immediate attention of both cats in the room and the appearance of two more: a sleek grey and a brown tabby with mismatched green eyes. The seal-point cat slid off the loveseat with a thump, padding over on big fluffy paws and starting to investigate the floor by her feet.

She ruffled his fur and put a treat down in front of his nose. “This is Helios. He’s a ragdoll throwback. I showed you a picture of him on my phone, remember?” Another treat a foot away drew the grey kitty in closer. “This is Phoebe. She’s the oldest, and can be a bit cranky.” Summer pointed to the tortie, still shying away. “That’s Doc, whose full name is Doctor Isadora Turbokitten. She and Kronos are littermates.”

Great. Had he suddenly crossed a line now? “And correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty damn sure you wanted things to move along with us. Is that just too damn fast for you, or what? I mean, if it is… I can take back the offer.” Oh great, he needed to watch his mouth again.

He released his hold on her, running a hand through his hair before rubbing his forehead. “Right, um, let’s just back up a moment. Okay… If it’s all moving too fast for you, I can stop. That’s more what I meant.”

Summer started to laugh. “Look at us, falling all over ourselves to keep the other one from feeling pressured.” She put a gentle hand on his lips. “I just wanted to be sure I was hearing you right and not jumping to conclusions. I still need a little time to think about it, but provisionally, yes.”

She took her hand away from his mouth to take his hand. “There is something you should probably know beforehand, though.”

“No, it’s okay, you should ride it to my place.” Summer brushed her fingertips over the heel of one hand, dislodging some grit and wincing. “Does the fact that I have cats to adore you make up for my stupidity?” Once again she swung her leg over the bike, balancing on one foot while she waited for Robert to mount up.

“I never said what you did was stupid. But, you mentioned cats and now you’ve captured my attention.” Robert mounted his bike, pedaling a bit to arrive beside her. “Lead the way then, so I can meet these feline friends of yours, before my curiosity and need drives me nuts.”

“You’re already nuts,” she shot back, starting to grin. She led him to the southern edge of the park, and then another five blocks farther on, until they reached her apartment building. “Hope your bodyguards don’t come looking for you,” Summer teased, parking her bike and locking it up with swift efficiency.

She led the way upstairs, too, flicking through her keys one-handed and unlocking the door. “I wasn’t planning to have visitors, you know, so — please forgive the mess.” She pushed open the door.

One solid wall of the living room thus revealed was covered with shelves, which were, in turn, packed with books of all types and sizes. One case was all dvds and video games. A loveseat and a papasan chair took up another wall, and a complex entertainment system the third. Stacks of unshelved books littered the floor, among cables.

Down the short hallway could be seen the edge of a bed and an open, half-packed suitcase on the floor. A pair of dark ears emerged from the suitcase, followed by the rest of the small tortoiseshell cat, bounding down the hall. On the loveseat, a pale ball revealed itself to be another cat, fluffy and seal-pointed.

“Take the time you need. By that point, I’ll probably be back home in California, but until then, I’ll keep in mind that I can simply pick up the phone and give you a text. I don’t know why I forget about that.” Truth be told, between filming and then relaxing, along with interacting with the fans, Robert wouldn’t think about it. Not immediately, anyway.

“Then … ” She stopped. “Will you want me there when you go home?”

“That’s what I was hoping.” Like he’d leave her behind completely. That wasn’t something he was likely to do. “Like you said, though. Take the time to think about it, and let me know what you think.”

A cacophony of thoughts rattled in Summer’s head, all of them trying to jump out of her mouth at once. She opened her mouth, closed it, opened it again.

“I feel like I’ve missed something here. Stop me if I’m jumping to conclusions here, but it sounds like,” she paused, trying to still the butterflies doing mad tangos in her middle, “like you’re asking me to move in with you. Basically.” She stepped back a little, trying to look at his face. “It’s a bit … I mean, this is just the first time we’ve kissed. So, you know, the signals are very mixed. Robert?”

Great. Had he suddenly crossed a line now? “And correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty damn sure you wanted things to move along with us. Is that just too damn fast for you, or what? I mean, if it is… I can take back the offer.” Oh great, he needed to watch his mouth again.

“I’m really sorry.” Summer hung her head, fumbling at the handlebars of her bike to right it. Thoughtlessly, she wiped her hands on her skirt, then cursed. “Dammit. I just really suck today.” She blinked, and a tear rolled down her face. She swiped at it impatiently. “Maybe I better just … look, you want to just come over to my place and watch a movie?”

Hey, it could be worse. “I guess that’s something we could do. Even after I went through the trouble of actually getting a bike…” Not that it really bothered him. Worse things could have happened than that. Robert ran a hand through his hair, debating whether he should bring the bike back now or not. He could use it to get to her place, couldn’t he? Eh, he’d have to wait and see.
