“So what do you do for a living?” she asked curiously, browsing through the usb sticks and micro-sd cards with a gentle touch. It seems a little odd to her that he wouldn’t know some of these things, but then she’s constantly having to remind herself that most people simply don’t explore as deeply into computers as she does. He’s obviously old enough to be her dad, after all, and her dad is unique among the species.
The single question was certainly not one that had not reached his ears before, which was why the man was prepared to answer without any amount of hesitation. “I’m a private security consultant and a federally licensed firearms dealer.” It might have sounded like a line from a script that had just been rehearsed one too many times as it had indeed been offered up to numerous people. It was not as if it was entirely a fabricated truth, it did not fully capture what it was he did on a somewhat regular basis. While he did indeed help private companies and wealthy families with their security systems, there was definitely much more to be said than that. Of course, that which had been deliberately kept from the helpful female would not be believed by most. The information was sensitive as it was no secret that there were still plenty of people who were blissfully unaware of the true dangers that lurked in the dark.
“Oh, wow.” Summer glanced over at him again, a twinkle in her eye. “Shouldn’t you have people to do these things for you, then? That sounds like a high-ticket kind of business.” Just a gentle tease, while she looked at things she can’t buy and played let’s pretend in her head. Although usb sticks are pretty cheap now. They have to be, for the way some of her fellow students lose them and abandon them around the computer labs. She kept hers close, fastened to her keychain, with her best work stored and constantly updated. “Actually,” she added, frowning a little, “I didn’t know guns were legal in California.”

“In that case this will be perfect. As long as you remember to update the backups!” Summer laughed a little. “I’m terrible at that; I end up with three copies, all from different dates, in four different locations. But since I’m kind of paranoid about losing the data, it’s okay. I know I’ll be able to recover most of it.”

[ It is now all too apparent that the person with whom
he is currently conversing is someone who is well
versed in the category of technology. Maybe not
the most capable individual in the store as people
with massive amounts of knowledge regarding
computers enter and exit the store on a daily basis,
but someone who definitely knows what it is she is
speaking of. He cannot help but feel grateful for
her assistance as he is far from being able to qualify
for the title of computer master or anything akin to
that. To show his gratitude, he offers up a small yet
still intentionally genuine smile to the helpful stranger. ]
❝ I’ll remember to update. I don’t blame you. Protecting my files is why I’m here. ❞

“That depends on what you want to do. Are you building a new system, or just trying to back up the one you already have? Plus,” she glanced at the drive he was holding, “if you’re trying to back up a lot of media, like music or movies, that one probably isn’t big enough. It’s a question of exactly what you need. Do you need the data to be backed up on a regular basis, like a business, or maybe you take a lot of photos you don’t want to lose, or are you just making an ‘oh shit’ drive for things like tax returns and mortgage scans?”

[ The adult would not even know where to begin with
building something like that from scratch. Despite
having owned some type of computer for the
majority of his life thus far, he does not consider
himself to be a technology savvy individual. Just
a person who is more than capable of making use
of common programs and toying with a few of the
customization options. All he currently needs to do
is ensure that a handful of highly important files are
backed up so that he does not lose them should
something go wrong for some unpredictable reason.
As that is the case, he is already prepared to handle
any questions this knowledgeable stranger dishes out. ]
❝ I was just looking to backup some of my documents. ❞

“I know it’s the cheapest one, but in this case, being an off-brand isn’t really that good.” She picked up another portable hard drive off the shelf and offered it. “That brand is known for a lot of failures and data loss. If you’re backing things up it’s worth it for reliability.”

[ With certainty, he can say that he
appreciates the help that has been
offered by the stranger. While cost
is certainly a key factor for him when
it comes to making a decision regarding
merchandise, it is more important for
him to purchase something that is worth
the while than something that will not
burn through his wallet. Whilst taking
hold of the one that she has been
holding out for him to take, he also
moves to return the one that he has
randomly picked up to its place on the
shelf. Lips then proceed to steadily part. ]
❝ Thank you. Are there any other products you recommend? ❞

[ Light blue hues glance up so
that the particular item is no
longer being looked at. Now,
the entirely unfamiliar person

being regarded in a manner

Yet, it can only be assumed
that there is something that
has not been seen. Some detail
that the adult has somehow
managed to quickly dismiss. ]
