It’s one of those gorgeous lucid dreams — the kind where a part of her is awake, struggling to hold on to what she sees. She’s dreaming of a wood: unfamiliar, old growth, wide spaces beneath the tall trees. And there is Loki, on the edge of the glade.

She doesn’t know which Loki; she knows so many, now. He changes, in that way that dreams do; now heartbreakingly young, now subtly marked with the weight of millennia. Always tall, so tall. Long hair, short hair; armoured, casual.

She cannot see his face. If she could see it, she might know — is she here for love, or hate? To die, or live?

In a dream, it could easily be both. Or neither.

She calls his name.

“Oh, of course. I gave you that one.” Summer quit hiding the smile, grinning openly now. “Go on, keep guessing.”

Keep guessing. He was fed up with the games. Loki hid his scowl however, whirling about on his heels to face Summer once more. “I’m tired of the games. Tell me or leave. I don’t wish to be among your presence anymore.”

“Oh, you don’t get to make that choice.” Once again her smile slid from amused to dark, almost a match for Loki’s own wicked smirk. “You forfeited your choices when you brought war to my world and lost.” She swung one foot. “You can stop talking, of course, but I won’t be leaving.”

“… Then why are you here?” That’s all he wanted to know. Why she was here. Odin brought her in, that much he knew, but other than that, there was nothing. He wasn’t willing to be watched; he had been locked up for over a year with no incidents. Why now? In frustration, Loki turned away again. He knew he wouldn’t get the answer. Why would he? He had lost his freedom, because of his own actions.

“I told you, I’m not going to tell you that. You’ll know when you figure it out, and not before.” Summer settled herself more comfortably into the chair, for the first time taking her eyes off the figure of the trickster and examining the contents of his prison.

“The plan wasn’t entirely my own. Had I not been rushed and forced to act accordingly, I could have taken all those Avengers down.” The trickster’s face turned into a slight scowl, once again facing his back to her. “One would believe I should be thinking about my actions, but why should I? It won’t change what happened, plus, wouldn’t it just screw up this mind of mine. I don’t plan on risking that.”

“If you wanted to win, you should have opened the portal wider.” She shrugged. “It almost looked like you wanted to fail.” Her mouth twitched, hiding another smile. “The Avengers weren’t the only ones there. You know. I don’t think you could have stopped all of us.”

“I wasn’t trying to fail.” Was he kidding himself? He honestly wasn’t really trying. Not at first. Was it all his plan? Was it? Now he was racking his brain for the answer. Loki turned away from Summer, letting his mind process everything. “I realize it was more than the Avengers that were there. I’ll take a guess. You were there, were you not?”

“That’s a fair assumption.” Her eyes crinkled with her smile, more genuine this time. “He calls me Sunshine. Still think of him, do you?”

“… Sunshine indeed.” Summer seemed perky, and it was mixing ineffectively with his own personality. Already he could say he wasn’t enjoying himself. The trickster finally turned around, advancing towards the barrier that separated them both. “It is not like I have much else to think about, other than those that ruined my plan for Midgard.”

“I think you are supposed to be thinking about what you did, rather than what we did.” She didn’t move when he stepped closer, just tipped her head to the side slightly. “You didn’t plan very well, anyway.”

“You may call me Summer.” With her chin in both hands, elbows perched on knees, she knew she looked very young. “Do they still call you Silvertongue?”

“It is merely a nickname. That I had grown fond until it was used against me.” Yet, deep down, the nickname still remained a favorite, better than other nicknames that floated around for him. “I’d prefer if you stayed with Loki. I had enough nicknames from Stark. Is it safe to believe that you are from Midgard?”

“Neither, I think. There /is/ a reason, of course, but I don’t actually think you care. Do you? Though I suppose it breaks up the monotony.” She propped her chin in one hand, watching.

“I feel as though I should beg.” The sarcasm dropped from his words, his back still turned to her. “I suppose I don’t care why you’re here. But, it involves the All-Father, thus I will find out…” Loki peers over his shoulder at her. “So let’s go the easy way about it, shall we?”

She gave a little wave when he finally looked at her. “Mmm, no, I’m not going to just tell you, after all. You’re /so/ much more interesting with that confusion and curiosity.” She grinned, all teeth. “But you can go ahead and ask if it makes you feel better.”

There was no surprise this wasn’t about to be easy for him. Leave it to the All-Father to bring him one that would be hard to crack. “Asking is too easy, and that seems to be the direction you would prefer not to go in. Then let’s start out with a name. You must know me. What about you?”

“Is the All-father allowing guests now? Or did you simply sneak in here of your own will?”

“I wouldn’t say ‘guest’.” The redhead dragged a chair over in front of the cage and perched on it. “But he does know I’m here.”

“Then there must be reason why you’re here. Shall I ask, or will you simply just tell me?” The trickster kept his back to his ‘guest’, not at all really interested why she was here. Clearly this meeting was some what important for the All-Father to know about it.
