It’s one of those gorgeous lucid dreams — the kind where a part of her is awake, struggling to hold on to what she sees. She’s dreaming of a wood: unfamiliar, old growth, wide spaces beneath the tall trees. And there is Loki, on the edge of the glade.

She doesn’t know which Loki; she knows so many, now. He changes, in that way that dreams do; now heartbreakingly young, now subtly marked with the weight of millennia. Always tall, so tall. Long hair, short hair; armoured, casual.

She cannot see his face. If she could see it, she might know — is she here for love, or hate? To die, or live?

In a dream, it could easily be both. Or neither.

She calls his name.

Summer paused and contemplated the facade of her apartment building. It felt like much longer than a week or so that she had walked away wondering if it would even be worth it to come back. She shook the keys dangling from one hand and blew out a breath. The knot of anxiety in the pit of her stomach was stupid and meaningless. Marie would welcome her back, or shoot her on sight. Loki, the same.

She fit the key into the lock and pushed open the door, stepping inside. Home.

“And where have you been?”

Loki sat there in the shadows, his voice carried a hint of something between condescending and concern. It was difficult to pinpoint, as all else with him. “I’ve worried myself ill.” Definitely he’d been dipped sarcasm this time.

Summer dropped the keys in startlement. “For fuck’s sake!” she gasped on a rising shriek. “What in hell are you doing here?!” She leaned back against the door, pressing a hand against her chest. “I needed some space to think. I needed to … recenter myself.” Her voice took on a snap of snark. “Does that meet with your approval?”

“Don’t you dare jinx it! I swear to god if porn shows up on here I will hold your head under water!”

I’ll let you know I can hold my breath for a long while!!

With a devilish smile, Marie looked at her sister,” Come here Amber sweetie.”

*screams and takes off running*

Laughing and takes off after her,”Don’t run sweetie IT WILL ONLY HURT MORE!”

I’VE MADE A tERRIBle MIstAKE *trips* oH sHIT

Laughing Marie hovered over her sister, her eyes tinted red,”Oh Amber hunny we are gonna have so much fun now aren’t we? You can hold your breath for a long time hmm? Well lets see how long you can hold your breath in a pool of darkness,” She said with a twisted grin, her teeth turning to fangs as the shadows moved beneath her,”Even daddy can’t save you now.”

“Aaaaaand that’s enough, Marie. No permanent marks.” Summer scuffed a toe on the floor next to the two.

Looking at Summer with red eyes, Marie lit a cigarette, ”She has to learn eventually, the world will not always be so kind. She may be a child but she is Loki’s youngest, she needs to learn now.”

Folding her arms, Summer regarded Marie with an amused gaze. “I can assure you, there’ll be plenty of unkindness for her to face without you setting up your sister to be a copy of our father. You want to play rough, be my guest, but,” she leaned forward, into Marie’s face, “you keep your pretty darknesses out of it, sugar. Amber, don’t tease your sister.”

“You don’t tell me what to do, if I want to have my darkness out then I will, she has to see what I am truly am sooner or later.” She said glaring at her older sister, ”Stay out of my face Summer.” She muttered getting closer to the older sister.

“Are you going to carve me up into chunks, sweet sister? Slide your shadows under my skin and make me wish I was dead before you let me go? Fill me full of holes until the light cuts through me like lace?” Summer grinned, a baring of teeth. “Oh do, do, Marie, take me apart and don’t bother putting me back together. You want to show her your darkness?”

It only took a half second for Summer to yank Amber’s tiny, but genuine, fear out and magnify it before shoving it into Marie.

Letter

Loki,

I feel like I owe you an apology. I’ve … not been easy to be around lately, and I’ve taken out much of it on you. I shouldn’t do that.

You’re angry that I still care about you. That I still love you, despite your devotion to Vennyce. I don’t entirely understand your anger, but I accept it. I can’t stop, though. I’ve never been able to.

You’re right, I do fall in love easily. How can I not, seeing into people’s hearts the way I do? There’s always something beautiful there, always something lovely, admirable. And everyone should be loved. If I can do that, why shouldn’t I?

I don’t stop loving easily. It’s probably best that way. I do get hurt. But it’s best that way too. I should be the one to get hurt; I can take it. I can always take it. So if you need to lash out again I’m here.

Summer
