She pushed the hood back again to stare at him, embarrassment tinting her cheeks. Then she flung herself at him in a huge hug, radiating gratitude overwhelmingly.

Derek was  a little startled at the sudden hug and rush of emotion, though he caught her and tentatively patted her back soothingly, still a tad bit stunned at the force of her gratitude but glad he could help and make someone feel so thankful.

A tiny, tiny giggle escaped her at Isaac’s whine and wiggle, and then she paused, frowning in surprise and amazement. Lifting a hand to her throat, she tried to say something, but nothing came out.

Isaac wiggled until her hands lifted, and Derek’s head came up off the pillow as she giggled. His eyes went wide a bit as he grinned at her.

She tried again, brows drawing down, as her fingers tapped at her throat. When nothing came out again, she slumped into the pillow, heedless of the fact that she was still half draped over Isaac. After a moment she flopped over into Derek’s chest, staring up with a woebegone expression.

Derek snarled lowly but kept his head down as he was transferred to the person that bought him, seeing a small female form before him now.

Spring waited until he’d fallen to silence again before speaking. “Some that we bring here respond better to simple kindness than others. When we find one who doesn’t, Summer takes it as a personal … insult. She wishes you not to hurt.” Perching on the edge of the table, the blonde simply watched him.

“What do you want to know?”

“I haven’t insulted anyone. Well, not until just.. a minute ago… and that wasn’t an insult. That’s frustration. You know what I mean.”

He was disgruntled now, worked up and frustrated by everything, by how he couldn’t just function. He was waiting to be blindfolded and chained, electrocuted over and over, though it hadn’t come yet. If kindness didn’t work, what would be next.

“What was she talking about, about how I’d respond to… something?”

“You’re free.”

Spring didn’t adorn it, or soften it, merely laying the statement out baldly. “All that’s left is giving you the papers. Summer went to fetch them.” She swung her legs a bit, still watching him closely.

“We hoped you might want to stay.” It’s an odd quirk of speech they all have, saying ‘we’ where most people would use singular pronouns. “Your name has power, among the preternatural.”

Derek snarled lowly but kept his head down as he was transferred to the person that bought him, seeing a small female form before him now.

Both women turned to him, faintly amused. “So providing for you doesn’t gain us anything?” Summer inquired. Then she waved her hand. “No, never mind that, because clearly it didn’t and doesn’t. I was going to wait a few days for this, but now’s as good a time as any, really.” She gave Spring a quick kiss on the cheek. “I’ll be right back.”

Spring, as unruffled as ever, gazed after the departing redhead with cool green eyes, then gestured at the examining table. “How have you been eating? Are you in any physical pain? Any cuts or marks you didn’t show me yesterday?”

Derek huffed and very nearly pouted, more scowled as Summer flitted from the room. “What’s she playing at? Should I feel bad now because of those digs at me? I don’t know how to function here! I’m used to being treated as subhuman, as scum, beat and electrocuted, and because I’ve been a grand total of maybe 16 hours without that I’m supposed to be grateful and open up about trusting people!” he burst out in a low roar.

He huffed again at her calm and scowled from the corner, not going to the table, not wanting to sit and be prodded at right now. “I’m fine. Eating. Following vague people around in a strange place.” The last question he paused before answering. “It’s nothing that isn’t working on healing,” he murmured and shrank back to the corner a bit more.

Spring waited until he’d fallen to silence again before speaking. “Some that we bring here respond better to simple kindness than others. Everything felt so good — blinking her eyes open slowly, being warm and relaxed, waking without a headache, not being alone. Derek’s little sound, pulling her closer, made her smile. Her feet were tangled with Isaac’s. Even her mind felt relaxed, not clenched in fear and desperate seeking.

So she shared that feeling with them — how nice the morning was, the simple happiness. Then her mouth quirked with mischief and she tugged away from Derek slightly to flop on top of Isaac, running fingers down his sides to find the ticklish spots.

Derek felt the feelings, a low rumble emitting from his chest, a pleased sound. Isaac, responding to the share and the noise, wiggled a little closer until Summer flopped on him. Derek rolled to his stomach to hug the pillow as Isaac whined, wiggling under her as her fingers skimmed over his ribs.

A tiny, tiny giggle escaped her at Isaac’s whine and wiggle, and then she paused, frowning in surprise and amazement. Lifting a hand to her throat, she tried to say something, but nothing came out.

When she came back, sans tablet, one eyebrow again ticked up briefly at his lack of shirt, but she didn’t comment on it. “Are you ready, then?” Summer asked instead. “You taste much better than last night, at any rate. Good.” Picking up the tray, she gestured to the door with her head and went out the door, simply assuming he would follow.

Back out through the locked door at the head of the hallway, she turned in the opposite direction from the kitchen area and into a small examining room. “He doesn’t trust us at all,” she said quietly.

“If we can just coax him to stay for a few days, I think he’ll be able to be on his own. Physically, at least,” Spring replied.

“We’ll see what happens when I — ” Summer cut off.

“Taste? What do you mean taste?” he asked as he slid off the bed.

He followed behind her tentatively, looking around more now that he was alert. He heard her whispering before he walked into the room. He stopped at the doorway, just a step inside, eyebrows raised. “You expect trust when you whisper about my trust issues when you think I can’t hear? What were you about to say?” he asked, more bold than he’d been before, still expecting some punishment, some backlash, anything for his showing out.

Both women turned to him, faintly amused. “So providing for you doesn’t gain us anything?” Summer inquired. Then she waved her hand. “No, never mind that, because clearly it didn’t and doesn’t. She paused on her way out the door, glancing over her shoulder with a lifted eyebrow. “You have enough spirit to growl at me. I honestly expected you to run away at the first opportunity.”

Then she was gone.

Derek’s eyes trailed back up to catch a flash of red hair as she left the room. He sat for a moment, thinking over her words, and then he slowly slid to the end of the bed, reaching for the tray and bringing it onto the bed with him.

He ate as much as he could, which was a little bit more than the night before but not by much, and then he went to shower. The hot water felt like heaven and his muscles finally began to relax a little bit. After the shower, he toweled off and tugged on a pair of the pants that were in the room, then sat on his bed.

Derek was  a little startled at the sudden hug and rush of emotion, though he caught her and tentatively patted her back soothingly, still a tad bit stunned at the force of her gratitude but glad he could help and make someone feel so thankful.

This felt right. Familiar. Someone curled at her back, guarding her from the things that went bump in the night. She smiled in the dark at that idea, that some of the things that went bump would protect her from other things. But then she knew that humans could be more monstrous than anything called a monster. Waiting for sleep to reclaim her, she stroked Isaac’s back lightly.

When she opened her eyes again it was morning.

Isaac had leaned into the touches, relaxing under them from Derek and Summer. Derek settled in and they all calmed and then fell asleep one by one. Isaac was out soon after Summer and then Derek was a little bit later.

The next morning, Derek felt Summer stir and grumbled lowly, snuggling a little closer as Isaac snuffled in reaction, rolling over and nuzzling into his pillow.

She patted the space to either side of her, looking small and lost all alone in the big bed. When they climbed in, she laid down on her side again, and hesitantly reached out to put an arm over Isaac’s waist. As her fingers brushed his skin she flinched away, reaching to grab Derek’s arm instead and pull it around her own waist. Then tentatively she tried again with Isaac.

Derek and Isaac complied and crawled back in, getting set how they’d been before. Isaac felt a little hand brush him but jump back, holding still and hiding his face in the pillow. He could feel her hesitation.

Derek, when bid to, scooted forward and curled himself around Summer’s back, arm around her waist loosely, easy touch. As her hand slid out for Isaac again, Derek’s went also, gently touching Isaac first, calming his own nerves. He had a history he hadn’t shared with Summer yet, but Derek knew it, and gave the contact to relax him, so Summer wouldn’t get that anxiety. Isaac relaxed into the bed under Derek’s hand, welcoming Summer’s hand next.

“You just really don’t feel comfortable with deciding what to do for yourself yet, do you?” It could sound condescending, but she kept her voice grave and gentle, eyes calm and expression kind. “First, I want you to eat.” She tapped the edge of the tablet against the tray in emphasis. “Then, I want you to take a shower. Don’t worry about using up all the hot water. I’ll come back in half an hour or so to check on you. Is that okay with you?”

“Freewill got your back butterflied like a steak in the market, what do you expect from that kind of conditioning,” he shot back, glaring and growling at her lowly in defense, no matter the tone she used with him. He wasn’t an animal, he’d just been treated like one most of his life.

“Sounds fine,” he grunted out, no longer even looking at her, choosing to examine his own knees.

She paused on her way out the door, glancing over her shoulder with a lifted eyebrow. “You have enough spirit to growl at me. I honestly expected you to run away at the first opportunity.”

Summer’s mouth twitched a little, as if she was concealing a smile. “You have a very good point,” she said gravely, instead. “I will bear that in mind. Will you come with me now to see Spring, or would you rather eat and sleep some more?”

“I don’t think I need to sleep more just yet,” he murmured. He’d caught sight of a clock. It’d been almost 12 hours that he was asleep. He didn’t know how long she’d been sitting in his room.
