Tony bit his tongue. To him it hurt so much more than telling someone that they weren’t his type. Because he wanted her to be. But he had too many demons, too many bad memories.

And those demons, and his desire, were picking at him as he sat there, forcing one hand to leave the safety of his knee and to find its way to hers. It sat there gently as he tried to decide what to do.

When his hand covered hers, she jumped. All his pain and fear rang down the touch, and she couldn’t help it anymore; she started to cry. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you again. I’m sorry. I’m not, I’m not what you say I am, truly. I’m just me, plain ordinary me.”

“No, hey. It’s all right,” he murmured, his brows pulling together. He moved his hand to wipe a few tears away from her face. “It’s okay. I’m just a mess all around, but I am trying to work on it. It’s not your fault.” He sighed, tilting his head to the side. “I don’t think you can convince me otherwise, really… But maybe, maybe we could try to make it work? If you want? I just don’t want to hurt you. I’m not exactly known to have successful relationships…”

She couldn’t breathe. Everything was moving too fast. Who was comforting whom here? She thought she was just being a friendly person, and now he was … he was asking her out? Tony Stark was asking her out, an hour after meeting her, was talking about a relationship.

“Yes?” She said hesitantly.

The flush shot up into her face so fast her ears rang. Summer had to swallow hard and remind herself to close her mouth. “You could have any girl in the world just for asking.” She could not help herself; she looked down at her hands, limp and shaking slightly in her lap. She couldn’t doubt him, not with it brought to the surface by her questions. Oh, she was answered with a vengeance!

“You can choose anyone, and yet you’re saying that /I’m/ too good for you.”

Tony wanted to reach over and touch her, and he did make a move to do so, but he restrained himself. Barely. He put his hands on his knees and squeezed them to keep them busy. Because she was too good for him, like he’d said. “Yeah…” He answered lamely, not knowing what to say.

“I suppose that’s better than ‘you’re not my type,’” she whispered, starting to knot her fingers together. He wanted her. He wanted her, and he wasn’t going to do anything about it, and hide behind this excuse of her goodness. In the end, how was that any different than not being good enough? Their burgeoning friendship would struggle under it, if her past told true.

She wanted to run away, but first she had to do something about this burn in her chest all of a sudden.

“Ah, yes. Sorry. That’s what I meant though.” Tony had to agree with her about emotions being deceptive, and he nodded along with her at that. He watched her face, noting that she was having a hard time meeting his gaze, but the reason behind it didn’t click.

“That part of me wants you. I have to stop myself because you’re too good for me.” He looked down, wetting his lips. “I want to prove to you that you’re desirable for just being yourself, because you are…”

“I’m trying to figure out how to get you to listen to me, to believe me. Without seeming like a dick about it. Because you are all those great things I’ve said you were. I can see it and I’ve only known you how long now?” he laughed lightly. “And then there’s the part of me that wants to act on that, how I feel you are… But I won’t let myself. Not yet, anyway. And there’s another part of me that is both confused and impressed by how you would actually ask instead of… reading me, if that’s the right term. I wouldn’t be so polite about it, I don’t think. But there it is again; your goodness.”

“I have to ask that one,” she pointed out. “What are you feeling, yes, I can read /that/. And I can frequently extrapolate the thought from there, from what I know. But I … didn’t want to know. That way. Emotions can be so … deceptive.” She was still having to force herself to look away from his mouth, but she didn’t really want to look him right in the eye either. Who knew what he might see in her face?

She’d always been too open, too easily read. And too honest for her own good.

“Now you have me curious. The part of you that wants to act on how you feel I am?”

She tipped her head to the side, considering him. “You let me just jump into the middle of your life and rummage around. You said you liked that I’m honest, but when I tell the truth about myself, you correct me — and you believe it.” Her expression fell into pensive lines. “Why?”

“Because I don’t believe it. I guess. I see you from another angle. I’m sorry if that bothers you, I… I’m used to that happening with me too… You get this idea you just know is true about yourself, and then someone says something else and it can be frustrating. But that’s… I don’t know; that’s how I see you, so I’m going to say something if I feel you need corrected.” He pulled up in front of an older-looking building and removed the key. But he remained seated, looking over at her.

Summer watched him watching her, trying to decide if the tension was just her imagination or something else. She didn’t want to use her empathy on him, not even to listen, not right now. There had been enough of that already tonight. She kept having to pull her eyes away from his mouth.

“What are you thinking?” she asked softly.

“That’ll be all, JARVIS.”

Tony took all the information in, storing it away. He focused, though, on the fact that SHIELD had her listed as a mutant. ”An empath, huh? Makes sense…” he murmured, referring to how she’d helped him earlier. “Cool,” he said genuinely interested.

Having no real powers of his own, unless one counted his intelligence, he was immensely interested in those who did. “Is it terribly impolite to ask you about that? Or, well, maybe I should let you have your chance to find out about me to even things up.”

“I don’t mind,” Summer responded, shaking her head. “Most people are scared of me when they find out. They figure it’s like telepathy, that I can know everything. Is the Mongolian place much farther? My stomach is starting to make unhappy noises.” She fished a stray strand of hair out of her mouth where the wind had blown in, watching him drive.

“I can see people mistaking the two… It’s unfortunate, but most people are not all that well informed. We’re close now, yeah. Few more minutes away,” he said, noting the lack of traffic on the road. “Anything in particular you wanted to know about me?” He asked, prodding a little.

Tony nodded. “I suppose I could get JARVIS to try that. One sec,” he said, pressing a series of buttons on the dashboard to activate the AI in the car.

“Sir?”

“Run a scan on my partner in crime here, would you? See if you can match her face to a name for me. And whatever else you can find out. She wants to be impressed,” he said, grinning.

“Of course,” JARVIS agreed, and after a few moments, it spoke again. “Summer Rainault.”

Summer made a mildly impressed expression as the AI rattled off, “Born August 17 1980 in Tupelo MS, age 32, currently residing New York City, height 5’2” weight 135 lbs.” — “Hey!” she objected — “No known employment at this time, no known legal relationship at this time. SHIELD notes subject is a mutant, known ability empathy, both receptive and projective. SHIELD notes subject is a magician, known skills manipulation of fire. Shall I continue, sir?”

“Well good grief,” she ejaculated. “I think you know more about me now than I know about you!” But she didn’t look annoyed, raising her hands into the motion breeze and grinning up at the stars.

“I’m quite capable of giving compliments to those who deserve them. That’s one of the things people don’t seem to grasp about me. I’m not a complete asshole. Maybe more like three quarters of an asshole…” He considered that for a moment before nodding. “Yeah, that sounds about right. Especially since you’re right. I haven’t, have I?” He asked, sheepishly. How he’d managed to get that far without asking her name was beyond him. “Is it too late to ask?”

“I think I should make you guess, now. Or at least work for it. You’ve got that amazing AI, after all, I bet it — he? — could do a facial match.” Summer coaxed, “Show off for me, just a bit, please?”

Tony nodded. “I suppose I could get JARVIS to try that. One sec,” he said, pressing a series of buttons on the dashboard to activate the AI in the car.

“That’s real sweet of you to say,” she told him, a hint of southern drawl creeping into her words. “I’m fine with how I look, really. You don’t have to tell me different.” Pulling the door open, she slid in, admiring the gadgetry of the dashboard. “Mmm, I could get used to this.” Her eyes sparkled at Tony. “I’ll have to come up with a reason why you should keep me around.”

He sighed, but didn’t push the issue. Tony walked around to the driver’s side and dropped in, sliding the key into the ignition and starting her up. He inhaled deeply, listening to the engine purr. He looked over to Summer and said, “I’m sure we can think of some reason to keep you around,” he remarked with mock-seriousness. “Because you being incredibly nice, and refreshingly honest isn’t enough.” He changed gears and started the drive out of the shop and toward the driveway.

“Anthony Stark! That was a compliment! What in the world. I’m all sort of flustered now.” Mockingly Summer fanned her face. “Goodness me, sir, I shall have to be suspicious of your motives. You are quite dangerous to a lady’s sensibilities!” She couldn’t keep a straight face any longer and started giggling helplessly. “You know what’s hilarious? You /still/ haven’t so much as asked my name.”
