Erica couldn’t help but to laugh as Summer smacked straight into a lamp post. “Oh my god, are you ok?” She was giggling as she walked over to her and put her arms around her shoulder.

“Yeah that’s fair enough, I love the really mind fucky books though, they keep me reading.” She smiled and browsed through the pile with Summer. She was so glad she now had a friend who shared her passion of reading.

“Well, but there’s a difference between books that make me think and books that fuck with my mind. You know? Like Ender’s Game, that makes me think. Oooh, I’ve been trying to find this for ages!” She pounced on a tiny, thin book.

“Yeah, I get what you mean.” She looked down at the book Summer had picked up and raised her eyebrows “What’s that?”

She showed it to Erica. “The Ordinary Princess. I remember reading it when I was very small, and it made a big impression on me. It’s about a princess who is cursed to be ordinary, and finds out it’s actually a blessing. You know, the sort of princess with six sisters, each more beautiful than the last, that kind of thing. I used to daydream about meeting someone who would see what was inside me, instead of just looking at my appearance.”

“Definitely. Oh there’s this book I heard about that I really want to read, it’s called The Maze Runner. It’s supposed to be really good.” She smiled as she and Summer continued walking down the street in the direction of the store.

“I started it, but I got distracted. I don’t know, I don’t really like books where I spend the whole book wondering what’s going on. Third-person limited is just really hard to read.” Summer shrugged, stopping to browse through the sale books outside. “But you should try it anyway. I just want to see if they have any copies of Words of Radiance yet.”

“Ok, that sounds awesome. I bet everything will be awesome and we’ll get to go with our dream guys and be amazingly happy.” She grinned. Why wouldn’t they say yes? Her and Summer were both awesome and gorgeous. Stiles and Isaac would be lucky to get girls like then. Her confidence was starting to return as she took a deep breath.

“Exactly. And there’s not a damn thing we can do about it today.” Summer nodded her head sharply. “I still want to go to the bookstore today.”

“Of course not this minute, I’m not planning on talking to Stiles right now.” That was when the deal finally hit her. Shit. “Oh god … I can’t do this Summer, not now, I’m not prepared, I don’t even have a dress and I haven’t talked to him in ages and I … “

“Need to breathe?” Summer suggested. But as usual, someone else’s panic settled her own. “Prom is six weeks off. So we have time. I say, even if we lose our courage and chicken out, let’s still go. We’ll just go together, and everyone else can say what they like. And we can get dresses first, and, and, and I need a trim.”

“Ohh, that’s a good plan. I need nerve with Stiles, I’m pretty sure he still doesn’t even notice me … ” She really wanted to ask but was afraid she wouldn’t be able to get the words out when she was there. “Ok. How about this. I’ll ask Stiles if you ask Isaac.” She grinned at Summer, hoping that she would be able to actually go through with this.

“Ooooh, I take it all back, you are a horrible person, Erica,” Summer teased. “How am I supposed to say no to that? You are a dirty cheater. Fine. I will,” it became hard to get the words out past the butterflies in her throat, “I will tell Isaac it’s me and ask him to prom. But not this minute.”

“How can he ask you to prom if he doesn’t know that you’re in the same school? But that’s really sweet how much you know about each other without even knowing who you are.” Erica let out a laugh at Summer’s suggestion and poked her back. “Ha. Yeah. I could never work up the nerve to ask Stiles..”

“No, see, that was not the point. If he asked me I think I would pass out, right on his feet. And then crawl in a hole. I want to see if he asks anyone else, and then if he doesn’t I — maybe I will ask him. What kind of nerve do you need to ask Stiles? Seriously.”

“Ahh prom. Every girl’s dream and nightmare. Oh god, I’m not going to have a date … again.” She let out a small sigh as she hugged Summer back. “That’s fair enough, you take your time, but does he know that you’re someone from his school?”

“He knows that I like him, and that I can see him, and that I know where he lives. He knows about the books I like to read and my poetry and going to conventions.” She sighed and looked down at her hands. “He doesn’t know we’re in the same school.” Summer poked Erica in the side with an elbow. “Why don’t you ask Stiles?”

Erica couldn’t help but to laugh as Summer smacked straight into a lamp post. “Oh my god, are you ok?” She was giggling as she walked over to her and put her arms around her shoulder.

“I already took a risk!” she pointed out. “I’m talking to him, aren’t I? He just doesn’t know it’s me. I don’t want to mess it up. Anyway,” she looked down, gnawing at her lip, “unlike you I don’t get to not worry about convulsions. It’s /me/, Erica. Nobody’s ever going to like me like that.”

“That is true. But I think he’d really like you, you don’t need to worry about it. Isaac’s not the kind of guy who would tease you or judge you, he’s a really good guy, which I’m sure you know.” She smiled over at Summer and tried to reassure her. “Summer, you’re gorgeous and amazing, Isaac would be lucky to be with you.”

Summer shook her head and laughed helplessly. “You are an amazing friend, Erica. There aren’t that many girls who are like you.” She hugged the blonde sideways. “I’m just not ready yet for him to know it’s me. I — I want to see if he asks someone to prom first.”

Erica couldn’t help but to laugh as Summer smacked straight into a lamp post. “Oh my god, are you ok?” She was giggling as she walked over to her and put her arms around her shoulder.

“He’s kind of still wound up in Lydia, who is still all about Aiden,” Summer commented, about Stiles. “You see what I mean? He probably likes someone else, and I’m just … I’m not gonna be — I can’t, I just can’t. He knows someone likes him and that’s all it’s gonna be.” She made pretend wolfy claws at Erica. “What the hell was up with that anyway? I don’t even get it. Why should being, you know, bitten make so much difference to you?”

“Hey, I’ve pretty much accepted defeat with Stiles, unless some miracle causes him to actually think about me that way. But I know that Isaac doesn’t like anyone else, he would’ve told me if he did. Come on Summer, you’ve gotta take a risk. The bite gave me more confidence, so I was able to act confident and express myself, basically. Also not worrying about seizures really helped.”
