Helios swiped at the finger with his tongue, but missed, and scrunched his chin down into his chest ruff, looking smug. He greeted Tony’s question with an enormous, toothy yawn. His eyes got a little wild and his ears twitched around a lot as Tony carried him down the halls, and he lifted his back feet and spread the toes, trying to sit up in the curve of Tony’s arm.

“Relax, Fluffy,” Tony said, shifting the cat into a more stable position as he stepped into the elevator.  He pressed the button for the penthouse, and resumed scratching Helios’s chin until he stepped into the den.  “See?  Just fine.  Nap time.”  He walked over to the couch and dropped down, and then flopped onto his back, cat on his chest.

As if to show his disdain for Tony’s soothing, Helios writhed to a standing position on his chest, making little kneading motions with his paws, just below the arc reactor. He walked in a circle, inspecting the hem of Tony’s shirt and applying whiskers to his chin, before deigning to lie back down, legs thrust against the back of the couch. He lowered his head to his paws, blinked at Tony a few times, and purred them to sleep.

Which is how Summer found them, an hour or so later, and forebore to wake them.

Helios contentedly let Tony flop his paw around, all limp tendons and boneless felinity. The purr increased in volume, and he slitted his eyes at Tony. A pink tongue licked at his nose and Tony’s arm.

Tony patted the paw to Helios’s nose a couple times, and then finally scooped up the entire cat.  He shifted, sitting back on his rear with his legs splayed in front of him, and cradled Helios with one arm, his other hand scratching Helios’s neck and chest.  “Lazy furball.”

Purrfully, loud enough to be heard across the room, Helios wrapped his paws lightly around Tony’s forearm, like he was hugging the arm. He was even more relaxed in Tony’s arms than he’d been on the floor, the end of his tail twitching gently back and forth. When Tony scratched his chest, he looked down and licked at the hand, then licked his own nose again, and left the end of his tongue hanging out a little bit.

He laughed quietly, and poked the tip of one finger against the cat’s nose.  “Boop.”  Keeping Helios balanced with one arm, he pushed himself up to his feet.  “I think I feel a nap coming on,” he informed the cat, as he headed for the penthouse.  “What do you think?”

The ragdoll made a stupid “omg that is /so/ good” kitty face and shoved his skull into the floor, stretching his chin toward Tony. A very faint purr rumbled from his body. One paw reached up, brushing at Tony’s arm before flopping back down like the effort was just too much.

He snickered to himself.  “Nah, you don’t give a shit about my work.”  Still scratching the cat’s chin, he used his other hand to pick up the fuzzy paw, wiggling it around playfully.  “You probably don’t give a shit about all that much right now, so long as I keep petting.”

The end of his dark tail waved, slowly, and Helios paced across the carpet until he was about a foot away. Then he put his head down, and rolled over onto his back, hind legs relaxing into a stretch, and looked at Tony upsidedown.

Tony smiled slightly, and reached out to scratch the fuzzy, upside down beast’s chin with two fingers.  “What’re you doin’ in here?” he wondered with quiet amusement.  He’d given up wondering on the ‘how’ when it came to critters navigating the tower.  “Here to help me with my work?”
