Summer lowered shaking hands from her mouth, where she’d clamped them to stop herself screaming. “He’s not dead,” she whispered. Clearing her throat, she repeated a little louder, “My lord, he’s not dead.”

Indeed, the knight was fumbling at his helmet, trying to get it off. “Finish it,” he groaned. “You must — finish it.”

Arthur gave Summer a nod, “I know, Summer. I don’t believe that I must kill him in order to continue on.” He faced the knight, keeping a protective stance in case of a attack. “Sir Knight, is there no other way? I don’t wish to kill you, only continue on. You fought with such strength that I’ve never seen.”

“I know you say I must kill you, but there must be another way to do this.”

Feebly, the knight fought with his helmet, trying to get it off. “Please,” he rasped. “You must.”

Sighing, Summer brushed past Arthur and helped the fallen knight. She held the helmet in her hands, looking over the revealed face. Young, blue-eyed, pale curly hair limp with sweat, Much like Arthur, in fact. He lay supporting himself on one elbow, looking up at Arthur with pleading eyes.

“If you don’t, it all begins again,” he said.

Your muse comes home to find my muse on their doorstep, curled up and asleep and clearly waiting for your muse. What does your muse do?

He gently kneels down and shakes her arm. “Summer? You’re gonna get cold out here.” He speaks softly.

“Waiting for you. I had to find you.” She frowns. “I don’t … remember … why … ” The words come slowly as she rummages through her memory, but it’s all blurry. She’s not even sure how long she was there. “I just had to find you … ” Why is there a gap in her memory!? It’s terrifying. She has a good memory!

“Alright… well I am here now, why don’t you rest, Summer? You look exhausted and with how you were sleeping, I don’t blame you. Get some rest and you can talk to me about it in the morning. We’ll get to the bottom of all this.”

Fear slashes through her, and she flings out a hand. “Don’t — don’t leave me alone.” Then she realises what she just said, and jerks her hand back. “Sorry. I’m sorry. I’ll just — ” She pulls the blankets over her face, burning red.

“I won’t —” Arthur spoke softly, chuckling at her blushing, gently putting a hand to the top of her head. “Summer, it’s okay. If you want me to stay I’ll sit over at that chair over there and you can sleep.”

“No, I — ” Her head hurt. She couldn’t think. Arthur couldn’t leave; she needed him to stay. Why? She reached up, running a hand down Arthur’s arm.

“I don’t know.”

“I already regret this.”

Arthur could feel a burn in his shoulder from holding his shield. It was as if the knight wasn’t even exerting too much strength and just kept going. He wasn’t blocking many attacks, and when the shield slammed down to him, there was a space to attack his side and Arthur took this when he next attacked.

The knight nearly doubled over Arthur’s blade, so deeply did it crunch into his side. There was a horrible shriek of metal, and the knight’s hand spasmed, letting his sword fall.

Summer screamed.

The knight stumbled, and crumpled to his knees.

Arthur jumped back at the crumple, he wasn’t going to go any farther, he accomplished and was able to keep Summer safe. He wouldn’t dare keep going and destroy the already dead soldier.

The faint doesn’t last long, and Summer soon opens her green eyes to fall on Arthur’s face. The world still feels like it’s moving under her feet, even though she’s lying down. “Sorry,” she says softly. “I don’t mean to be such trouble.”

Arthur shook his head, “Don’t you worry, you’re resting. I got Gaius on his way here and you’re going to be okay?” He spoke, pulling over a chair and sat down next to her. “Do you remember what you were doing before you fell asleep?”

The dark knight deliberately stepped into Arthur’s stroke, shield over his shoulder to keep the blade from his armor. He kept attacking, fiercely, attempting to drive Arthur back, and never once tried to parry or counter any of Arthur’s strikes, only interposing his shield as much as possible. He seemed to be trying to defeat Arthur through pure strength.

Summer clasped her hands together, watching with held breath. She knew Arthur had won many tournaments; he was a skilled knight, but there was nothing to know about this stranger knight. His grip was strong, that was all she knew. And the way he spoke — she wondered if there were many folk in his castle; how long had he been plundering this bridge?

The dark knight’s shield was as black and blank as his armor. He lifted his sword in a kind of salute to Arthur, then brought it down in a mighty stroke.

Arthur didn’t know how this person would fight. Other knights from him or neighboring kingdoms, he could figure out. He’d spent lots of time watching them fight and train. So Arthur would have a general idea of how they would fight, the steps they took, parries and for forth. But this, this was all a mystery to him, one he wasn’t so sure about.

He held onto his shield, holding it up as he blocked the stroke and quickly moved away, swinging his sword in his own mighty strike.

“I feel so strange, though … ” Summer shivers, eyes falling in and out of focus. The world feels like it’s drifting in a slow circle around her. Her fingers dig into Arthur’s arms, trying to steady herself.

Arthur began to lead Summer toward her chambers, unsure as to why she was acting in such an odd manner. He felt her hands digging into his arms and he gently took them off, holding her hands. “Summer, it’ll be okay.”

“I’m falling,” she says wildly. “I’m falling, why am I falling?” She clings to his hands, eyes widening, latching onto his face. “Arthur, no, you can’t be here … “

Then she faints.

Arthur was concerned and confused, catching her quickly before she fell to the ground. Carrying her, he made it to her room, he walked inside and placed her on the bed.

“This makes no sense… falling?”

Arthur’s eyes watched the knight carefully, he wasn’t going to stand if he laid a hand on Summer. She hadn’t done anything to deserve what was happening to her.

“I do challenge you.” He spoke confidently, turning his sword toward the knight.

“When you are defeated, I will take your shield and hang it with others who have fallen to me. I will take your lady and hold her in my castle.” The dark knight’s voice was strange, emotionless and cool and with an odd echo from the helm.

With caution, the knight turned back and lifted Summer from her horse, setting her on her feet a little distance away from the road. “You will abide the outcome.” He collected the reins of both horses and tethered them to a tree nearby, before, finally, drawing his sword and turning to face Arthur.

“And when you are defeated, you will leave everyone that comes across here alone, you will also grant safe passage across the bridge for me and the lady.” Arthur spoke confidently, but with calm, still wanting to know just who this mystery knight is.

He watched him treat Summer with care, concerned and confused, not knowing why he was being so kind to her. Perhaps the knight still had a sense of honour and was going to treat the lady with the respect she deserved. He kept his sword up, getting into a defense stance for when the knight attacks.
