Stiles slammed his laptop shut as he walked over to the widow, cracking it so he could speak to Summer. “H-hey… Uh… Whatcha doing?”

“Well you know you can talk to me about anything.” Summer gave him an earnest look. “Come on, tell me what going on.”

Stiles shook his head vehemently. “No. That’s… it’s really not a good idea. I might jump you or something, you should go home.”

She frowned even harder and climbed in the window to touch his arm. “Stiles, what’s — “

And she felt it. Burning in his bones and pulling at his control; leaping across the physical contact to her. She shoved up shields as hard and fast as she could, stumbling back and hitting her head on the window.

“Who did this to you?”

She frowned a little. “Please don’t lie to me. You know I hate that.” Hitching herself up on the sill again, she added, “Is it your dad?”

“I’m just.. going through some… mm… Some stuff. Nothing personal,” he said bouncing on his heels to distract himself.

“Well you know you can talk to me about anything.” Summer gave him an earnest look. “Come on, tell me what going on.”

“Um … Stiles, are you okay? Is something wrong?” Usually he would invite her in, babble excitedly about all the cool things in the game, show her his characters.

Stiles gripped his hand behind his back, shrugging nonchalantly. “Everythings great. I’m great. Why wouldn’t it be great?” He said, before biting his lip, trying to fight the lust. He’d definitely hurt Summer enough and didn’t need to send mixed messages to her.

She frowned a little. “Please don’t lie to me. You know I hate that.” Hitching herself up on the sill again, she added, “Is it your dad?”

“Came to see how you liked your birthday present. It’s not exactly my kind of game, after all.” She hung half over the windowsill, grinning.

Stiles kept his eyes firmly on Summer’s eyes. “Um… Yeah. It’s great. Thanks. Uh. I’m kinda… Busy! Yeah, I’m busy.”

“Um … Stiles, are you okay? Is something wrong?” Usually he would invite her in, babble excitedly about all the cool things in the game, show her his characters.

Helios lifted himself up to keep the prey in sight as it began to climb. The prey’s earlier canniness must have been an accident, because surely it could see that all he had to do was stand up to reach it. He didn’t even have to stretch! He peered at the prey, eyes narrowing — and the prey threw things at him!

Helios abandoned his post in great haste, even as momma came in to see what the noise was.

“What are you doing, silly kitty? Making a mess?”

He twined her legs, looking at the prey triumphantly. Momma would catch the prey now. Momma was smart, for a humin.

Summer stepped over to the bookshelf, frowning. “What /have/ you caught?” She reached out and grabbed the miniature nogitsune, holding him firmly by the back of his coat. “A faery?”

The Nogitsune yelped in surprise as he was lifted from his position. “Let me go, you filthy human,” he yelled out, trying to punch this human’s hand.

“A faery? Are you an imbecile?” he asked, offended by the human’s very insinuation that he was similar to the fae.

“I’m a thousand years old! I’m Void! Let me down!”

Summer lifted the struggling creature up to eyelevel, frowning at it. “Void,  huh? Well, Void, this is my house, and those are my books you’re throwing around. I don’t care how old you are, don’t abuse my books.” Sitting down, she put the wee fox on the coffee table and studied him. “So you aren’t a faery. But you’re tiny. What /are/ you?”

“Oh my god. Summer, you didn’t have to do that.”

“Consider it an apology for being so much trouble lately. Happy birthday, gamer buddy.”

“Oh come on, Summer. You haven’t been any trouble,” he said, hugging her.

She huffed a self-deprecating chuckle and dared to kiss his cheek quickly. “I think that depends on your perspective.”

“I think I had figured that out,” Summer said softly. She spread her hands. “I — I don’t even know what to do now. I would never have let you know how I felt if you hadn’t — and now you know something I didn’t want you to know, ever.”

Stiles sighed and bit at his thumb nail. “I don’t know what to do to make this better, Summer…”

“There is no better! I just have to forget, okay. I have to — it’s not even you. I’m stupid, and I just — ” She buried her hands in her hair and tugged. “I just have to find a way to forget.”
