“Perhaps then you would do well to let me speak, my lord?” Summer teased. She caught his hand, pressing a kiss into his palm. “I spent my days mostly reading, though my brother coaxed me out to practise archery while the weather was fine. Your books were so welcome, for I feared I’d go mad thinking of you.” She looked up at him, biting her lip.

“I feared my memories deceived me,” she whispered. “How could a man like you see so much in me? You, my lord, are brother to the King. Your words fall sweet on my ears now.”

“My lord,” Summer gasped, drowning in his kisses, “Humphrey, stop, please stop.” She couldn’t stop herself kissing him back, pressing close to him, body yearning into his arms. “Humphrey, slow down.” It wasn’t that she didn’t want him, in the least, but being ravished up against a wall with haste was not her idea of a good time. She wanted the luxury of exploration, to tease and play and experiment.

“Slow down, as stop and wait for you?” he asked, looking at her. “If you wish me to I would, tho I tell you it would be hard… but I would try my best.” He kissed her again, deeply, “or do you mean to take this to a more convenient place?” he murmured. “That is certainly much easier to arrange.” He kissed her, pulling her close once more, holding her tightly pressed against his body. “Anything you want, my love.”

She pulled away from his insistent kisses. “I wish to take my time with you, my lord. Not in haste, but in leisure.” Stretching up to his ear, she murmured, “This is my demand for your long absence. I’ll not be taken like the wenches you tumble in alehouse and hayloft, but as the lady you treasure.” Summer slipped out of his arms deftly, leaving only her fingertips in his. “Do those pretty words mean anything, my lord? I’ll have you prove it so.” Very deliberately, she lowered her eyelashes, looking up at him through them. “Come, are there yet no pillows we might lie on, since you have returned?”

Two weeks had seen but little change in the routine of Summer’s life. Her sister had returned to her husband’s manor, her other brother Alfred had come up from Kent, and she’d read ‘Il Canzoniere’ through several times. She grew ill-at-ease, beginning to doubt her memories and herself, and would often take out the necklace and slide it through her fingers. Even archery barely soothed her mind.

When finally the Duke returned and sent for her, she struggled to contain herself before the servants. She near drove her maid to distraction fretting over little details, and only managed to relax when she was at last ahorse, quiver slung to one side, gifted books in a saddlebag to the other, and Humphrey’s gorgeous velvet gift about her shoulders.

Finally she arrived at the house, and Humphrey himself welcomed her, helping her off the horse. “I believe you only became more beautiful my love,” he said and confirmed with a kiss, for all to see. Here in his household, he had no troubles of gossip to worry about. “I have another present for you, for today you shall need her,” he said when the squire escorted the little grey spaniel. “She is named Silver I was told. She is fairly young and inexperienced in the hunting affairs…do you hunt, my beloved?”

His household prepared half a dozen more dogs, along with arrows bows and spears, bags and food and flasks of wine, his squires and knights busying themselves around them as they talked. “I must apologise to you, my lady Summer,” Humphrey said. “My visit took longer than intended… I hope you decided what you ask from me for the wait. It shall be yours as I promised…”

“My lord, what I wish of you I dare not say.” Summer held his hands, smiling up at him. “I would not have you think ill of me. Only hold me, for I have sore missed your touch, and tell me of your journey.”

“If you dare not to tell me I am all the more inclined to hear it,” he grinned. “Mayhap I shall change the plans for the day and just remain in the house on some pillow holding and kissing you.” With that he turned and his arm still around her waist, he moved towards the house.

“Welcome in Bellacourt, as I call this place. Bella, as it is everything that is beautiful for me – or more so, it was before I met you… I hope you ceased walks on the empty streets after dark.” He offered her a chalice from the plate that a servant held out to him, and took one for himself. The servant took the rest to his knights to offer refreshments.

“There is but little to say. It was raining constantly… I wished to be able to close myself into the castle and sit by the fire. I went as my presence was required by the sherrif, apparently the gaols of Pembroke become full of thieves and other misdoers so quickly. I took one of my brother’s judges with me, and sat at court all day listening to their trials and wrongdoings and arguments. Not an activity I would recommend my love. Especially after they are found guilty. I doubt I saw as many hangings and arm choppings as in the past two weeks. The only good was seeing a few friends there, the mayor is one of them and he took me to this rather pleasant feast one evening… but mostly I kept to myself and my books, which reminds me…” he touched the material of her coat, “I am glad you had this finished on time. Hope the master was treating you well, and that he charged you nothing! I have sent him the payment for this.”

“This colour suits you, I knew it,” he said, “I could go on chatting but tell me my dearest, what were you occupied with while I was gone? How you spent your days? I confess you were much on my mind, Summer, and I found I know but little about you… about your likes and dislikes and all your past, and I wish to learn everything about you,” he said, caressing her cheek with his fingers, “I wish to know the lady who caught me so unguarded… like in the poem of Petrarch, love found me unguarded… So tell I hope to spend the day listening to you, and learning how the lady is who has my heart in the palm of her hands…”

“Perhaps then you would do well to let me speak, my lord?” Summer teased. She caught his hand, pressing a kiss into his palm. “I spent my days mostly reading, though my brother coaxed me out to practise archery while the weather was fine. Summer said, softly, “I could never think such. You are not such a man. Have I not said so before? I wish I could say, I will cease to love you, but I cannot. God has shaped me so, to love you, for your kindness and your wisdom.” Kneeling again, she seized his hand and kissed it. “You cannot take advantage of the willing heart. And I give you all mine.”

He knelt down beside her and he took her hand, “Please, do not do such things, I do not like to consider myself as a King when I am with you – but you know of such things, you know how the weight of the crown would ruin such things.”

Henry looked down at their hands.

“I do,” Summer sighed. “But surely God does not mean us to — to,” she broke off, unable to find the right words. “My lord, may I … I wish that you would kiss me again … “

He looked at her as she said those words, in slight apprehension and in slight confusion, she knew now that he did not know how to feel about her, and he would not know – but he knew he wished to kiss her again.

Henry touched her face softly, his eyes glancing to her lip but he shook his head.

“I cannot,” he said, “I will not lead you into something that I know not where it shall go.”

“What lead?” Summer asked. “What /lead/, my lord? Am I not already there? What then will you have me do? I cannot leave your city, my lord, for that there is no one to escort me. I cannot stay, seeing you every day.” She pulled away, rising and taking a few strides along the shore. “If there is no hope — and you say there can be none, which I must believe — then I would you did not know. ‘Twould be simpler.”

Whirling, she looked at Henry. “Am I to have no choice at all?”

“My lord, you are the King. It cannot be so.” Summer made herself meet his eyes. “I would entrust myself to your hands at any time. But,” she hesitated, searching his face turned down to hers, “why? You must have overheard me.” She coloured, but pressed on. “I meant to keep my feelings locked in my heart.”

He looked at her and then turned away, moving from her side.

“I do not wish you to think that I did such things because I am King or because I wished to take advantage of your thoughts and of your heart.” he said, and he sighed, “In truth… I know not how to feel about such things.”

“No, no please — don’t — Henry — ” As his name fell from her mouth Summer froze, certain that now, now his kindness would vanish like snow in summer, now she would be justly punished. Tears overflowed down her face, pulled to the surface by conflicting emotions.

Henry looked at her, worried that she no longer wanted him and he let go of her as they balanced from where they were standing, and his eyes fell to hers and he saw the tears on her face.

He should turn to leave, as he had that night, but once again his mind did not respond, and he moved and pressed his lips against hers again, pulling her closer to him.

His kiss was so familiar, Summer responded without thinking, swaying in to his body. For a long moment there was nothing but his mouth against hers and his arms holding her, and then memory stomped a hoof and she broke the kiss. “M-my lord?” It was hard to find the words, to shape them into her sudden apprehension. “My lord, were you in my rooms last night?”

Henry pulled away from her lips as she spoke and he sighed, closing his eyes he nodded in affirmation of her thoughts.

“Yes, I was upon your rooms last night.” he said, as he looked at her, seeing the memory – or perhaps she thought it a dream- in her eyes and he blinked at her, “Forgive me… I had acted too boldly.”

Involuntarily she looked up, hearing the movement of the other, and actually looked for the first time.

Poiters. The King’s favourite mount. And Henry the King.

A choked cry emerged from her mouth. Summer dropped to her knees, utterly heedless of anything else, and ducked her head. “Your Grace, I — ” Her throat closed up and words failed her. All she could do was wait for his wrath to descend on her, for her temerity in not recognising him immediately and in confessing such an unseemly emotion.

He stopped as he recognised her and he took a deep breath, as he stopped to look over at her.

“Lady Summer,” he said to her, and he saw her kneeling, and thought that she had fallen once again of her ankle, and he rushed to her, carefully picking her up. “You should not be riding with your ankle still unwell.”

She kissed him back, a low chuckle escaping her throat, then sighed happily and cuddled into her pillow, dropping into true sleep.

Summer woke the next morning still thinking the evening had been a dream. The weight of it lay heavily on her shoulders. She snapped at Bertha, shouted at the chambermaid until the girl cried, and finally stalked off in bristling anger and despair toward the stables. She flung herself ahorse as soon as she decently could, goading the animal into a gallop the moment they emerged from the castle gates. Surely no one would bother her out here.

She’d neglected to take into account Henry’s morning ride, though.

Henry was riding through the glens, thinking about how she had kissed him previously, he stopped by the lake and looked across the ocean deep in thought of it. He had felt so strange when she had kissed him back, not a strangeness that was unwelcoming – in fact, he enjoyed her lips against his.

He had not expected it, for he thought she was asleep and would not feel it. And that made him worry now, for what if she woke and wondered and knew if she had kissed him – though she had already betrayed her thoughts and he knew of them he did not know of his own thoughts.

Stepping off Poiters he made his way to the side of the lake and knelt down to take a drink, running some water through his hair as well.

Summer felt guilty when she came in sight of the lake. Petal wasn’t used to wild and fast rambles through the countryside the way Fireheart was. There was someone else there, she noticed, but if she didn’t speak to them, maybe they’d just dismiss her as a traveller and let her alone.

Dismounting, with care to her ankle, she led Petal to the verge to drink, pressing her face into the mare’s mane while she waited. “What am I going to do, my girl?” she murmured. “I can’t go back to Kent alone. Father’s determined to stay the season, so long as the King is here.”

Summer stepped away, keeping the reins looped in one hand, arms wrapped tight about herself. “I can’t bear to see him every day, feeling like this. Surely God is punishing me somehow,” she told the sky. “Sweet Henry, kind Henry, wise Henry, why must you hurt my heart so? To see you every day, and yet keep my heart a secret …”

Henry heard another come upon the lakeside, and he turned to look at Summer, he looked back down to the water and thought of how to leave without allowing her to see that it was him – and then she began to speak.

Once more she betrayed herself with her words, and he cursed the heavens to wonder how she could say such things so easily, when he could not even admit a simple thought to himself.

He stood up and went to Poiters, hopeful that she had not seen his face, but Poiters would be easy to recognise if she saw him in the stables.

Involuntarily she looked up, hearing the movement of the other, and actually looked for the first time.
