Of all the times for her fragile control to be overwhelmed — it had to be while her car was in the shop. So many people, too many people, too many emotions — it felt like her head was splitting like a shot watermelon. Summer perched on the brick edging outside the mechanic’s, clutching her head and trying very, very hard not to scream. Nearly invisible in the sunlight, sparks licked up from her fingertips.

“If I drank coffee I’d take you up on that.” She laughed a little, teasing. “I’m only offering to protect the other people you might run into if you don’t wake up a little.” Reshouldering her purse, she jerked her head at the nearby coffee shop. “C’mon.”

Aiden yawned again, “You’re sure? Y-you don’t have to.” He followed her anyway, coffee sounded like a great idea. He hadn’t been sleeping much anyway, and maybe she had a point. He’d probably just hurt someone else if he didn’t. “Thank you.”

“Of course,” she said, almost automatically. “Do you want to put your stuff in your car before, or … ” She left it open for his answer, already starting off toward the coffee shop.

Secret Admirer

Summer Rainault brushed her hands over her dress again, smoothing nonexistent wrinkles from the fabric. Tonight was the culmination of months of hope, weeks of planning, and days of daring activity. She’d get her freedom back, and win the heart of someone she cared about very much.

Even if they’d never met yet. If he didn’t reject her at the door.

She turned the lapis lazuli bracelet on her wrist, fingertips sliding over the heart charms dangling from it. The blue of the stone set off her pale green dress, and she hoped the signal would be clear enough, between bracelet, earrings, and cabochon choker. Taking a deep breath to subdue the butterflies in her stomach, she hung her keys from the strap of her tiny shoulder bag, and pushed away from her car.

Waiting would only make her more nervous. She tossed her red hair over her shoulder, squared them, and marched up the driveway. Another deep breath to steady herself, and she pushed the doorbell to the house where Isaac Lahey lived.

“Hi,” she said softly, when he opened the door.

When the doorbell sounded, he didn’t think anything of it. Still he hopped down the stairs, calling out that he’d get the door since Scott was in his bedroom and Melissa was working a shift.

He opened the door without a second thought.

—hi.” He had been expecting a solicitor or maybe one of the UPS guys dropping something off, not an attractive red head dressed like she was about to go on a date.

“Can I” he cut off a voice crack and cleared his throat instead. “Can I help you?”

Oh. He didn’t realise yet … her heart beat hard, and one hand crept up to finger the lapis disc at her throat. This was going to be so much harder than she thought, with his blue eyes actually fixed on her. Actually seeing her, for the first time.

Especially after basically flirting with him for a week through notes. Oh, god, this was a stupid idea. She should’ve just let Jesse have his way; this was going to end so badly, and the forfeit would be worse than simply giving in … ”I, uh, I’m your secret admirer.”

She collected all the bag handles into a neat bundle together and tried to lift it all up to hand to him, discovering it was a bit heavy. Comically, she exaggerated it, grinning. “Oof. Were you shopping for bricks to knock yourself out with?” She dismissed the apology with a shake of the head. “I’m Summer. Buy you a coffee to keep you awake?”

Aiden smiled tiredly at her, and took the offered bags. “Nice to meet you Summer. But, you don’t really have to, I mean, I’m the one that ran into you. I should be buying you coffee.”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Let me — help you get — those — ” Summer reached out to snag something round that was rolling away. “Please tell me there wasn’t anything breakable in there.” She blinked up at him. “Dude, you look beat, if you don’t mind me saying.”

He blinked, then reached down to grab his things, “No, nothing breakable, at least I don’t think so.” He yawned again, “S’okay, yeah, it’s been a long day.” He made sure he had everything back in his bags, “Oh, I’m Aiden, and sorry again for bumping into you.”

Aiden yawned, he’d been up since 5 in the morning, it was just starting to finally hit him. He yawned again while adjusting the the bags in his hands, all he had to do was make it home, then he could sleep. He was looking down and he didn’t even see the person he ran into, dropping the bags in his hands.

“I’m so sorry, I didn’t see you there. Are you okay?”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Let me — help you get — those — ” Summer reached out to snag something round that was rolling away. “Please tell me there wasn’t anything breakable in there.” She blinked up at him. “Dude, you look beat, if you don’t mind me saying.”

“U-huh.” He was clearly lying, but it wasn’t worth pursuing at the moment. “Thanks.” Wrapping both hands around the glass, she sipped slowly, watching him over the rim. He barely seemed to be out of breath. “So this is your home? Why is it safe here?”

Isaac shook his head. “No, well uh yes. -Ish. Because it is… Trust me.” No other house could be more secure than this one. “Who’s, after you?”

Setting the glass down, Summer put her hands in her pockets and walked over to stand beside his knees. Slowly, she said, “I’m going to trust you, but I know you aren’t telling me the whole truth, either.” Looking down into his blue eyes (not very far down, why was this town full of tall guys?), she went on, “I don’t know who it is yet. If I did, I would do something about it. Right now, I just know I’m in danger. They stopped following two or three streets back, but my apartment is on the other side of town.”

Summer couldn’t stop the yelp that escaped her when he picked her up, never seeming to break stride. She locked her arms around his neck and held on until he was putting her down in someone’s front hall — his, if the keys were any indication. Thoughtlessly, dragging in deep breaths, she exclaimed, “What the hell are you? You left them in the dust, while you were /carrying/ me!”

Isaac walked into the living room leading the way for her, before disappearing to fetch her some water. Returning with it and handing it over to her. He soon took a seat feet shifting on the floor awkwardly as he thought of the answer to her question. “I-I’m just fast,” he lied.
