Checking In

Summer shrugged uncomfortably, but met his eyes nonetheless. “I’m a mutant. An empath. I’m not staying here. I’ve a life, in New York, in the city. But I thought you should know.”

“An empath.. you’re the first one I’ve met.” He eyes at Summer with a curious smile. “I’m not forcing you to stay dear, you don’t have to be afraid.” He rests his hands on his lap, trying to look as nonthreatening as possible. “How’s your life like in the city? How do you manage to hide your abilities, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“Hiding the mutant ability is easy. It’s amazing how many people simply assume I’m reading body language, facial expressions, tones of voice. Phrasing. I don’t,” she hesitates, “manipulate. Unless I have to. Absolutely have to. Just knowing is enough, most days.”

She laughs, a little bitterly. “Most days, just knowing is all I can take. It just comes in and in and in, and for a long time there was no out. That’s the part that’s harder to hide.” Summer works her fingers a little, the curious gesture of someone used to working with their hands. “If I don’t find an out, I convulse.” Looking down, she goes on, “Until I discovered this.” And abruptly both hands are covered in flames.

Summer grinned back. “It’s hard to get comfortable when every time you describe yourself you have to edit ‘tall’ out. I /feel/ tall, dammit!” Patting his hand, she added, “I’m used to being overlooked. It’s, hm, familiar.”

Tom grins with her, raising his eyebrows as he listens to her. “I believe the height of a person is not how tall they are, dear, but how tall they feel. We gain recognition from confidence in our own selves, and that is when we are truly looked at.” He smiles at her then. “I’m not overlooking you, I swear, and I think that if you think others are overlooking you then you need to make then stop and start looking at you.”

“What, like this?” And just like that her free hand was lifted and among the fingers danced little flames that whirled higher and higher until there was a column of fire in her palm that winked out the moment she snapped her fingers closed. “Or maybe I should do it the other way … ” Summer’s green eyes went slightly unfocused. “It’s not entirely a front, this cheerfulness. You’ve lived it so long, it is real … but there’s things under there you’ve covered up, things nobody sees, hurts and slights and put-aside dreams … there’s still that little voice back there whispering … ” Her gaze clicked back to him.

“These days, if I’m overlooked, it’s because I want to be. I know my own worth. And now that I’ve rummaged around in your soul, why don’t we get something to drink?”

Summer and Tony

“No!… god, why am I so /stupid/ sometimes.” Summer turned around and pounded her head gently on the railing for a moment. Then she cautiously followed Tony inside. “I’m … sorry. I didn’t mean to hit a sore spot. Please?”

Tony finished pouring the drink and took a big swig of it before responding. “It’s not your fault,” he mumbled before taking another sip. He set the now-empty glass down on the counter and glared at the girl. He was angry at himself more than anything for opening up to her as much as he did. “So…tour?”

“Kaaaaay … ” Summer hesitated. “I didn’t … I mean … I … ” She pressed her lips together. “You’re angry now. You’re thinking, you didn’t mean to tell me all that. You … you didn’t. I guessed, because of your emotions. Please don’t be angry.”

You … went all sad just then. Don’t … it’s okay. I’m used to being alone. *reaches out a hand to him, frowning sadly* Please don’t hurt.

“Yeah,” Tony mumbled, pulling his hand away from hers and turning around to walk back inside. “Hurting is too easy. It’s hard to feel good about things.” He walked straight to the bar to pour himself some scotch.

“No!… god, why am I so /stupid/ sometimes.” Summer turned around and pounded her head gently on the railing for a moment. Then she cautiously followed Tony inside. “I’m … sorry. I didn’t mean to hit a sore spot. Please?”

We were just going to RP the 2 characters as friends? I ship them romantically.

We were just going to RP the 2 characters as rivals? I ship them romantically.

We haven’t even started the RP in question? No problem, I’ll still ship them.

I don’t even mean to half of the time. I swear, I have a problem.
