the Tale of Sir Isaac

She hid her tears in Laurence’s hair, and the boy petted her wrist. He didn’t squirm, but instead sat patiently, an odd thing to do for a boy of four or five. Finally she murmured, “I had rather be parted from them for the rest of their life, knowing that there will be a rest of their life. I am selfish, my lord, I cannot bear to watch them die if I can possibly save them.”

Laurence did begin to struggle then, pushing away from her with a look of horror on his small face. “You promised momma,” he whimpered. “You promised.”

“Some promises must be broken, for the sake of others,” she told him, smoothing his hair out of his dirty, tear-stained face.

“Go with him!” the boy wailed, pointing at Sir Isaac.

“I cannot. He is right, don’t you see, Law?”

“I can bring them all with me, if you want me to. Is there some way to arrange a carriage, or perhaps a wagon? Buttons here will eagerly take the weight of pulling it, and after all, it’s not all that far until we reach the other Kingdom,” Sir Isaac rambled then, reaching up to brush aside a wayward curl as he fixed them with a patient frown. “I’ll do whatever you decide, Summer, but the decision will need to be fast, for he could return at any moment, and he might bring extra men this time around.”

But Summer shook her head at him. “You cannot take the whole village. And if you could, what of the other villages? Would you try to save them all? Lord Argent is a harsh master, and his son is cruel, but he owns these lands, to do with as he wills.”

Gently, she put Laurence aside, and rose to her feet. She shook out her skirts and patted her hair, flaming down her back like some kind of burning river. Her expression firmed, determination marking her features. “You should go, my lord. He will return, and I’ll give him what he wants.”

Laurence set up a fresh howl at her words.

you’re looking for anything by Tamora Pierce?

Haven’t heard of her!  Tbh I don’t really read YA stuff anymore (I basically rage quit several years ago because they’re all so similar) but maybe I’ll look her up haha

I was going to list series by her I thought you’d particularly like, and it turned into everything she’s written. Do you have an ebook reader?
