the Tale of Sir Isaac

The Kentish knight had not been wrong.

The moment the Kentish Prince and his daughter were escorted into the great room, she knew. Everyone knew. It was impossible to miss — looking at the foreign Princess was like looking into a mirror. They had the same green eyes, the same slightly tipped-up nose, the same wide smile.

Only their hair was different.

Hearing her name was merely the keystone in the arch, for who would name a dark daughter Winter without a bright Summer to go with her?

Summer buried her face in Isaac’s shoulder and wept.

Disappointment and fear churned uncomfortably in Isaac’s stomach, his features twisting into ones of regret and longing, not wanting to tear her away from her family, but loathing himself for even thinking about doing such a thing. He shivered and screwed his eyes shut, rubbing his thumb across the back of her hand in a comforting gesture, before gazing at the gathering of people before them.

The other Princess was so eerily similar to his beloved Summer that it was quite disconcerting, the very sight causing his hand to tighten around hers, his jaw to clench. He couldn’t let her go, he didn’t want to let her go, but he knew that if she asked him to, he would do anything she asked in an instant.

But then the tears came, and he wrapped his arms tightly around her, murmuring hushed words of comfort as he rocked her gently against his chest.

She made Isaac stay behind, when she went to talk to them. She hadn’t expected to be seized in an enthusiastic, heartfelt hug by the foreign Princess, or for her father — her father — to also have their same eyes.

She didn’t know what to say to them, after that. The Kentish Prince — her  father — talked, instead. About how they’d never expected to find her, how she’d been mourned as dead, how she’d been kidnapped at the age of three and never seen again. How miracles happened, and how glad her mother would be to see her, how much they had to catch up on. How grateful he was to Derek Hale for protecting her, but of course she would be coming home with them.

There was a whole kingdom waiting for her to come home.
