“Magic?” Johnny raised a skeptical brow.

“Nah, I’m good… so wait. You can sense emotions? That sounds nifty. What am I feeling?” He grinned childishly waggling his eyebrows. He was actually feeling slightly stressed out. He knew that at any minute, Sue was bound to come looking for him in the jet, freaking out over nothing. That and then there was that thing with Charlotte, whom he definitely was not falling for at all, no sir-ee. NOT HAPPENING. Except it kinda was.

“Excitement, curiosity on top.” Summer’s eyes went half-lidded, and one hand reached out toward him, fingers spread. After a moment, she licked her lips and said, “Stress. You’re worried about something … several things. Protective … you want to protect someone. It’s very focused. It’s all … blurry, though.”

She opened her eyes, and her mouth quirked. “Amusingly, you don’t actually seem to be thinking about sex. That reputation of yours all made up, then?”

Of course at the mention of sex… Johnny grinned devilishly.

“It’s all a crock. I am a good Christian soldier, ma’am.” Johnny did his best Captain America impersonation, complete with salute. Flame shot off his hand, forming little patriotic stars.

“It’s actually kind of hard to fly, I can’t get off on too many brain tangents or I run into things.” Johnny smiled fondly, recalling the time he had scared the crap out of all the passengers on a Delta passenger plane.

Summer laughed. “Easily distractable. Oh, well.” She winked. “I /was/ looking forward to finding out about that reputation, but if you’re as good as all that, and so distractable too, I guess I’ll just have to accept that it’s all a lie.” Shrugging and pouting, she started to juggle little fireballs, watching Johnny through them.

“Nope. It gets uncomfortable after a while, it makes me really tired, and then I have to eat everything in sight to feel better… but no fire doesn’t hurt me at all.”

Johnny stared at her curiously. “How are you doing that?” He wasn’t big into science, but sitting on non-solids generally didn’t work out too well for him.

“Maaaagic.” Summer waggled her fingers dramatically. “Seriously, I have no idea. It just works. It’ll keep working as long as you’re up here with me, I expect, now. Lots of emotions from you.” She raised her eyebrows at him. “How long have you been in that form, then, today? Should I be being adult and sending you down?”

“Not so much of a handler…” Johnny started rubbing a hand through his flaming hair. “He’s my brother in law and has a weird hard-on for science.”

“What about you? Who do you hang with?”

“I’m more the solo type, really. It’d be nice to have a partner, someone to watch my back when I get up to my more kamikaze tricks, but …” Summer shrugged. “I really haven’t been here in the city for very long, either. SHIELD called me up to help out with cleanup after that whole … alien invasion thing, and I just decided to stay.” Folding her legs, she sat down on the air, looking him over curiously.

“Does it hurt?”

“Naienko, that’s a pretty name.” Johnny smiled charmingly at her as Reed started talking at light speed.

“Nai, is a Japanese negative though it generally comes after a word, Enko is a female name with meanings from charming to little princess depending on the characters used, enko is also a Slavic suffix meaning son of. What is she doing? Does she have any weapons? Nobody under the name Naienko is showing up in any of my searches.”

“I’m fine… just a little distracted. Sorry. Give me one second.”

Johnny put his hand on his ear. “Dude you have got to lay off the caffeine. She’s flying, and on fire, dude she has wings! I don’t think she’s going to attack so I’m signing off now.” He turned off the device ignoring Reed’s protests.

“Sorry about that.”

“You … have a handler. As a superhero?” Summer tried, unsuccessfully, to smother a snicker.

“The ladies just call me Torch.” He winked at her before heaving a mental sigh of relief. In Johnny’s vast experience, if it’s weird it’s either going to try and kill you or be an Avenger. So far it seemed like the girl was going to be one of the latter.

“What’s your name?”

“Remind me to make a camera for the receivers- no, he’s not in trouble. I think- No, that’s unnecessary- Sue, Johnny’s an adult and highly capable of handling- If he’s in danger we’ll know, I can hear everything he can.” Johnny could hear his sister’s disapproving tone mumbling but couldn’t quite pick up what she was saying. “Johnny, your sister implores you to proceed cautiously. If you can, describe what kind of power she is exhibiting. Is it telekinetic, robotic-” Sue’s voice cut through again and Reed paused. “But most importantly stay safe.”

Oh, lords gods and minor deities, she’d forgotten his reputation as a flirt. “You can call me Naienko. Mr. Torch.” She tried to look repressive, and folded her arms, but her suit wasn’t really conducive to that kind of attitude.

He looked abstracted. “Are you okay?”

She hung in the air, red hair blowing in the drafts, looking him over. “No, but I’ve seen you. Johnny Storm, isn’t it? The Human Torch?”

He certainly was. Summer had seen paparazzi photos of all the Fantastic Four before, but never seen any of them in action, and the Human Torch was literally that. It — well, to be honest, it took her breath away. What would it be like to /become/ the fire, instead of merely wielding it?

He was fast, too. Far and away faster than she, judging from the speed at which he’d crossed to her.

Summer hung in the air above New York City, not even bothering to beat her flaming wings. No one else was up there, and above the smog, the air was clear. From this far up, the city looked — peaceful. Calm. “Hateful,” she quoted to herself, laughing a little, before dropping straight off the column of hot air holding her up.

Nobody could hear her delighted shriek as she shot through the air, catching herself ten feet from the top of Stark Tower in a hard left bank that brought another bar of fire into her line of sight.

“Damn. Johnny Storm.”

Johnny followed the figure through the air, nearing Stark Tower. Figuring he’d been sighted, he quit holding back and blasted forward. The space between them disappeared rapidly, and he was able to see that it was a she and she had wings.

“Well that’s not what I was expecting.” He mumbled under his breath as he approached cautiously.

Deciding it was probably better to have access to backup, Johnny pushed the button on the receiver and Reed’s voice filled his head. “He’s back! Johnny that was extremely irresponsible. You have compromised all the data we’ve collected-“

Johnny ignored him. “Hi, I can’t say I’ve seen you before?” He called out to her.

She hung in the air, red hair blowing in the drafts, looking him over. “No, but I’ve seen you. Johnny Storm, isn’t it? The Human Torch?”
