Curling over, she laid her cheek against the top of his head and closed her eyes. Gentle fingers continued to stroke one ear, smiling a little whenever it twitched under her hand. For the first time in a week she didn’t feel the weight of the world on her shoulders, tucked up against one of the men she loved. Wanting to share it, Summer spilled a light projection into Tony; love and calmness and peacefulness.

Tony’s ears flattened for a moment, and the end of his tail twitched rapidly a few times as he was taken off guard by the unexpected mental intrusion.  For half a second he contemplated being perturbed, before he just…didn’t feel like it, and instead he gave a content hum—no it was not a purr, there was absolutely nothing feline about the noise, not at all—and leaned his head into her hand.

His little purr-sound brought the smile to her lips again. She scratched the base of his ears, fingers deep in his hair, and turned her face to press her nose into his hair as well. “This is perfect.”

“You’re supposed to ask before you do that,” he reminded her quietly, though he sounded far too content for it to be considered a warning or scolding.  He cracked one eye half open to look up at her.  “How’s the hamster now?”

Summer rubbed her nose against his skull. “I wanted to share. It’s much quieter in my head now.” She sighed softly. “Can we do this more often? Just cuddle?”

She’d been looking for trouble honestly, for once. Depressed and frustrated, angry for no particular reason, and itching for a fight.

Her taekwondo master would be ashamed of her.

Summer just latched on to the dark beacons of similar anger and went hunting.

But she’d sated that need, leaving a few bodies sprawled in the darkness of unlit corners, aching and unconscious and unburnt for once, and she was deep into regret now. Regret for losing control, giving in to the shadows that haunted her heart. Not at all paying attention to anything much around her until she walked right into someone else.

“Sorry,” the figure muttered, sincerity sliding off the word.

“You might want to look where you’re going, place like this,” Summer replied mildly, half admonishing herself as well. “It’s not safe.”

“I would hardly be here if I was looking for safe, now would I?” The words came out a bit more snappy that Tony had intended, and internally, he winced: that’s why being diplomatic and being drunk (and in pain, but that was the lesser of two factors) was never a good mixture to have when dealing with people. Like now, with the pain only adding oil to the fire of irritation.

“Anyway,” the genius made sure he sounded normal this time, carefully enunciating every word – and just succeeding in sounding reasonably sober (well… just a bit tipsy, at most) “Shouldn’t I be the one telling you that? Not to be sexist or anything, but you ARE statistically more likely to be attacked and all,” Tony gave the girl a meaningful look, subtly noting her… somewhat ruffled appearance, and her overall posture. On the other hand… “Okay. I take my words back. Guess you’re one of those that can take care of herself?”

“Smart man,” Summer murmured. She returned the assessing glance and deliberately raised her eyebrows. “I definitely think I’m safer out here alone than you are — without your suit. Mr Stark. And that’s without using my powers, either. With those, I could walk down this street naked and nobody would bother me. It’s sweet that you’re so concerned, though.”

She didn’t mean to sound quite so arrogant, and winced inwardly. But the words were said now, hanging in the air between them. She tucked the stray lock back over her ear and into her plait, watching Tony.

“Hey now, don’t diss me out just because I don’t happen to have my tech on me. Ain’t a good thing to do. And not just me. Heck, I know people who can take your head off with nothing but a… Okay. Shutting up at that point, because my imagination is, apparently, firmly set on ‘disturbing’ right now.” Tony shook his head, clearing out that last remaining bit of the alcohol haze that seemed intent on making sure he was acting the blubbering mess. Not an easy thing to do – but hey, the engineer had years of experience dealing with the board, Pep, reporters, Pep, one-night partners, Jarvis and his snark and last, but not the least, Rhodey after some wild nights out and this? Didn’t have nothing on any of the above.

“And I wouldn’t be too sure about the naked part – but hey, be my guest. I’m just pretty sure there WOULD be a few morons who would try their luck – there always are – but then again, there are quite a few people who deserve to have a nice show once in a while.” The words were accompanied by a more Tony-ish look, complete with crossed arms, semi-steady posture and the arrogant smirk. “Then again, there is press to consider, and no matter what they claim – that thing is a savage bitch one shouldn’t touch with a long pole. Or ever.”

“The press only knows me when I wear the mask, darlin’,” Summer drawled. “/You/ just happened to catch me on a night when I was going vigilante. As it happens, I’m absolutely certain about the naked part.” Teasingly, she added, “Would you happen to be thinking of yourself  as one of those people who deserves a nice show?”

“Oh, the swimming sounds fine, just … in actual water.” She laughed at him. “You have no idea how to actually date a woman, do you?”

“Just water huh? Luckily I don’t have to make dates, I only go to places and I run into them, the rest comes by itself. Improvisation for new ways of having fun, that’s my thing.”

The laughter came harder now. “I think I like you, Mr Stark. About that swimming? I like to swim.”

Summer rolled her eyes at him. “Date, remember? Easy there, boyo. I don’t think champagne would be good for my hair.” She turned around so he could get a good look at the auburn wealth spilling down to her knees.

“Clearly you do not know me at all. Does the term eccentric millionaire sounds familiar to you? I’m not the type of going for dinner or walking in the park… give me a better plan, then.”

“Oh, the swimming sounds fine, just … in actual water.” She laughed at him. “You have no idea how to actually date a woman, do you?”

invinciblestark:

I don’t really drink, Mr Stark. But I think a swimsuit can be arranged. Bit cold for outdoor swimming right now, though.
Not for this place, temperature can be level and well I didn’t really have in mind a drink as you would imagine it, but the pool filled with champagne for us.

Summer rolled her eyes at him. “Date, remember? Easy there, boyo. I don’t think champagne would be good for my hair.” She turned around so he could get a good look at the auburn wealth spilling down to her knees.

“I’m the help,” she told Jack. “People don’t help me, I help them. It’s the way it works. I accept that. I just — sometimes I have to get away. I have to run and hope I can run fast enough to escape myself.” Reaching out, Summer touched Jack’s arm. “Please don’t let my hurting make you hurt. I couldn’t bear that.”

He looked at her hand on his arm. “… But what if I want to help you so you don’t feel like it’s too much?” He asked softly, smiling at her. “You don’t always have to be the one taking everything on..”

“I don’t suppose I can stop you if you feel that way.” A very faint smile crinkled around her eyes. “Though I’ve no idea what you think you can do.” Summer let her hand fall, wrapping both arms around herself.

He shrugged a shoulder. “I could be your friend?” Although he shied away from the idea of ‘friends’ or anyone closer than an acquaintance.

“You don’t really want that,” Summer commented softly. “I wonder why? What is it you do want? The shadows run very deep in you, honey.” She looked him up and down, distracted out of her funk. “There’s such a sense of age about you.”

“My lord,” Summer touched his hand, leaning down from the saddle, “Henry, don’t worry about me.” She gave him a joyful smile and nudged Petal into a trot. In what short time could a whole world change. It was as if the sun had come out from behind the clouds of her mind, dazzling her with brilliance.

She wondered how Henry would choose to pursue their relationship. Would he be secretive, guarding her from the world in some wild attempt to protect her? Would he court her after the manner of kings, with gifts and public attention? She hoped neither. She hoped it could be quieter, casual touches of hands in the corridors, stolen kisses in the mornings, heartfelt and thoughtful gifts. A continuation of the simple kindnesses that had led her heart to him in the first place.

Henry smiled as she rode away and he turned back to the fields, taking Pointers – who had his fill of water – he mounted once more and made his way to the castle.

It was empty now at this hour of the day so he made his way to the kitchens to take some food, and to tell the chefs to prepare a meal for him, but nothing too elaborate – he planned to take Summer to his favorite place in all the castle, and there they could not take large feasts of food.

Summer tried to clear her mind of bemusement, making sure Petal was well tended, offering careful apologies to Bertha and the maidservant, supervising the clear-up of her night’s drinking and illness. A pulse of impatience beat in her veins, wondering when and how she could see Henry again, as opposed to the King in all his rulership. Henry the man was all she wanted.

But if they were to be together, she would have to accept the existence of Henry the King as well, and the way his duties would intervene between them periodically. Sitting on the edge of the bed, Summer picked up the book he had read to her from, turning it over in her hands. She’d finish her tale and wait for him to send for her.
