Summer closed her eyes and rubbed at her forehead before pushing back from the computer. She’d been frowning at the light levels in these photos for hours; time to get away before her eyes went square. She stopped for a soda in the break room and went to perch in the far corner of Studio Two. Maybe watching someone else work would help shake her brain loose.

Tony could smell it in the air, something interesting was about to happen. Anything would be welcome to break the monotony of the recent days in which he had been too busy to even think about visiting his lab. Tony perched uneasily behind his desk, too restless to fully relax. Someone knocked on his closed office door.

“Come in.”

Summer pushed the door open, slipping inside and closing it behind her. “Mr Stark? Do you have a moment? I’d like to talk to you about your company’s website.”

Staring down at his (flawless, immaculate, drenched-in-his-blood-sweat-and-tears) paper, a look of quiet desperation crossed his face and his hands started to shake. He had worked so hard, for days, and he had misunderstood the assignment?

“Fucking fuck!” he yelled, sinking onto the nearest available surface and gripping a hand in his hair.

Summer paused behind the tall, darkhaired fellow, eyeing him sideways as he started to curse. What was his name … “Bruce? Everything okay?” It was just the first paper of the class, after all, there was lots of time to improve his grade …

Summer wrapped her arms around herself and walked. The city that never sleeps was not sleeping, but it was late, and the roar and surf of humanity had dwindled to a softer hush of withdrawing tides. She’d fled to the enveloping trees of the park, desperate to get out of the walls that seemed to be closing in, echoing back her own thoughts more loudly with each passing moment.

But tonight the distant stars and rustling, darkened greenery did nothing to soothe her aching soul. Tears found their way down her face, sliding slow and cool and ignored, while she walked and walked and the world passed her by without a sound.
