The car wasn’t that far away. She was pretty sure she could hobble over to it — “You can put me down now. I don’t think you can hold me while I’m driving, chere.” She leaned on him, though, with a sigh of relief, despite the ache in her ankle. She just sat for a moment after getting in the car, not even putting the key in the ignition. “I don’t understand,” she said, limply, staring at the wheel.

“I just…I just want to hold you for a bit longer.” He sighed deeply in protest and pressed his lips to her cheek, then lowering her to the ground and holding her upright. As he helped her into the car, he flinched and ducked his head, kneading his fingers into the legs of his trousers. “I…what…what don’t you…I don’t know what to say, Summer…”

She reached out and put a hand over his, forcing it to be still. “I don’t understand /any/ of this. Who /were/ those people? Are you all werewolves? Were you — why do you all have different colour eyes?” She leaned forward, resting her head on the wheel, and made herself take a deep breath. “Do you — need to be out there with them? Because it’s the full moon?”

“Um, Isaac?” Summer glanced up. “Oh, you changed back!” Her tone was coloured with surprise and disappointment. “I — my car is over there.” She pointed. “D-do you need a ride home?”

Frowning in bewilderment at the tone to her voice, Isaac simply nodded, wordlessly trying to convey that whilst she wasn’t recoiling in revulsion at his changes, the other residents of Beacon Hills might not be as forgiving. “Please,” he murmured lowly and fought the tempting urge to curl in on himself, wondering if and when she’d demand further explanations.

“Bitten? Wha—OH. No. No, I’m not bitten. I just fell down. I’m fine, really.” She tried her best to be reassuring, which was a little hard when surrounded by werewolves. She slid her gaze back to the blue eyes, and noticed another pair of blue eyes in the shadows, much darker now.

Only one of them, only Derek, had red eyes. Did that mean he was the leader? But then what did blue eyes mean? Isaac’s eyes were blue when he — what would the word be — when he wasn’t wolfy, but not this kind of blue.

Summer heaved a sigh and put her head under Isaac’s chin. “I want to go home,” she muttered.

Eyes roaming her body with concern, he nodded slowly and seemed the most satisfied with her answer, although he still wasn’t happy with the coppery scent of blood lingering over her body. Something had hurt her, and both the human part and the wolf part of him didn’t like that.

Tightening his hold around her then, Isaac turned his head to glance at Derek for permission, and once it was granted, he turned on his heel and carried her out of the woods. As they reached the outskirts, his facial features transformed into his human ones again, silent for fear of what she might say to him now that they were alone.

“I scraped my hands when I fell … ” She took her hand back and peered at it in the moonlight. There were dark streaks on her palm. “And I think I sprained my ankle. I might have cuts in other places … “

“Were you bitten?” Red-eyes — Derek — snapped.

“I didn’t bite her!” Yet another voice — she turned and met the blue eyes that had first startled her.

Wincing in unison at her explanation, Isaac tightened his hold around her, protectively cradling her against his chest as he fought the urge to bury his face in the crook of her neck. She was hurting and it was all because of him – if she hadn’t gotten spooked by the howls, then she might not have fallen.

“Neither did I – she just fell, Derek,” he stated firmly, before doubt twisted his lupine features and he glanced down to gaze at her with obvious concern. “Summer? You…you weren’t bitten, were you?”

Summer yelped when he spun around, clinging more tightly. The pressure tweaked her ankle, too, the one that already hurt. Nerves made her tone sarcastic. “Can I be put down before you start fighting? I don’t want to bleed anymore than I already have.”

Someone growled softly, and then Gold-eyes interposed himself between Isaac and Derek, pulling one of her hands from around Isaac’s neck. “Isaac, I can smell blood.”

“We’re not fighting. I’m…I’m protecting you,” he murmured defiantly, posture still tense as he nuzzled apologetically at her jawline, before pulling back and sighing deeply, wondering if such an affectionate gesture from him might disgust her right now.

“Blood?” he echoed and stiffened, sniffing at the air before gazing down at her in panicked concern. “Summer? Did you hurt yourself badly when you fell?”

Summer froze, staring at him. “Werewolves,” she repeated. She looked up at the Moon, and back down at him. She took a few breaths, and said, “Well.”

“Isaac, what are you doing?” Red-eyes hissed.

Summer gulped, and clung harder. She wasn’t afraid of Isaac, even like this, but Red-eyes frightened her.

“Derek, you’re scaring her,” Gold-eyes said softly.

“I trust her, okay?” Isaac whirled to face Derek, knowing that he was being disrespectful and disloyal by answering back to his Alpha in such a manner, but this was for Summer, and he’d do anything for her. Plus, he wouldn’t lie to the only person that meant the world to him, not anymore.

“Werewolves,” he echoed with a nod and pursed his lips, waiting for her to say something more as he half-listened to the interaction between Derek and Scott.

He swept her up like she weighed no more than Helios, which put her much closer to the fangs than she really wanted to be in the dark, with adrenaline still tracing hot lines through her bloodstream. That close, she could see other changes, too: heavy brow, pointed ears, facial hair or fur.

But he was still Isaac underneath. His actions, his words, spoke that with crystalline clarity. He was still Isaac, /her/ Isaac, and he expected pain and loss. She put her arms around his neck and held on, looking right into those golden eyes.

“You have a girlfriend?!” three voices exclaimed simultaneously, in varying tones of surprise; of pleasure, of shock, of disapproval. She didn’t know which name belonged to which set of eyes; they all seemed the same in the dimness. Pleasure was Gold-eyes, who seemed oddly familiar; disapproval Red-eyes and simple shock Blue-eyes.

It took every bit of control she had ever learned to keep her voice from shaking, but she did it. “What are you?” She glanced around at the shadows looming around — looming less, held as she was against Isaac’s tall form, but still seeming to loom in the moonlight, and added, “What are all of you?”

Trembling slightly at the obvious scrutinisation, he fought the tempting urge to set her back down on the ground, knowing that it couldn’t be long before the revulsion set in. But he was a monster, and there was no way that he could expect her to understand that. He had no lie, no excuse to justify disappearing for a few night once a month and he had dreaded this moment, and now, it was here and he didn’t know how to react.

But the fact that she was possibly injured took priority and instead of pushing her away, he tightened his hold around her, his breath hitching as she wrapped his arms around her neck, ignoring the others’ exclamation as he focused on her only. Seeing what he hoped was acceptance, he let out a faint whine, seeking approval and wordlessly demanding her to speak, hoping that she wasn’t frozen with fear.

“I…we’re…” He faltered then, wondering if she would believe them or demand more proof, before deciding to give her the benefit of the doubt and tell her the truth. “We’re werewolves, Summer, and tonight’s the Full Moon.”

Summer froze, staring at him. “Werewolves,” she repeated. She looked up at the Moon, and back down at him. She took a few breaths, and said, “Well.”

“That’s something I’d like to know too,” another voice said. This figure had gold eyes, too, and somehow they didn’t frighten her the way the red eyes did.

“Friend of yours, Isaac?” asked a third person — the owner of the red eyes she’d almost run into.

Surrounded. She was surrounded by not-human creatures, and Isaac was one of them. She let him pull her to her feet, much more easily than she expected, and then cried out and crumpled the moment she tried to put weight on her foot.

Without pause, he scooped her up into her arms the instant she cried out, not quite registering that this position would give her a greater view of his physical changes. Inwardly admitting defeat, he cradled her against his chest and sighed, before finally replying.

“She…she’s my girlfriend. Summer, this is Derek and Scott and Peter and there’s a couple of others lurking about too,” he mumbled softly and ducked his head, waiting for her to react in some way.

He swept her up like she weighed no more than Helios, which put her much closer to the fangs than she really wanted to be in the dark, with adrenaline still tracing hot lines through her bloodstream. That close, she could see other changes, too: heavy brow, pointed ears, facial hair or fur.

His eyes glowed too; a vibrant gold unlike either of the others. Hyperaware, she heard a shift in the leaves and snapped her gaze around — there were glowing eyes all around. Swallowing hard, she reached out to take his hand and jerked back in shock.

He had claws. And when he spoke she could see his fangs.

And yet, there was nothing different about the essential Isaac under the skin. He was exactly the same to her other sense as always. She reached out again, and curled her fingers around his firmly.

A pained, almost animalistic whimper escaped him as she pulled back and he knew then and there that she was disgusted with him. Wishing that she hadn’t wandered into the woods tonight, or that they had all been more careful, he sat back and ducked his head in shame, tremors coursing through his hunching body.

But then, he felt fingers wrap around his, and he blinked in bewilderment, too afraid yet to lift his head up to look her in the eye. “What…what are you…?” he stammered out and then trailed off.

“That’s something I’d like to know too,” another voice said. This figure had red eyes, red like fire, and yet somehow they didn’t frighten her the way the blue eyes did.

Isaac shouted her name as her ankle twisted underneath her. She gasped in pain, then caught her breath on another gasp as her hands, outstretched to break her fall, scraped across something hard.

Isaac? Why was /Isaac/ out here? He was supposed to be studying! Was he running from these creatures too? And then the pain receded enough that she comprehended what he had said as she was falling.

/Explain/?

She twisted upright, struggling to sit up without touching the hurt places to the ground again, in the leaf litter. “Isaac?!”

Hoping that it was light enough that she would be able to recognise him, but dark enough so that she wouldn’t take note of the changes in his physical appearance, Isaac ducked his head and exhaled a deep, shaking sigh, his hand still outstretched in front of him.

“Summer…just…just get out of the ditch, and then we’ll talk, okay?” he murmured in a low voice laced with fear, terrified that once she understood what was going on, that she’d leave him and want nothing more to do with him.

His eyes glowed too; a vibrant gold unlike either of the others. Hyperaware, she heard a shift in the leaves and snapped her gaze around — there were glowing eyes all around. Swallowing hard, she reached out to take his hand and jerked back in shock.
