“Don’t get used to it,” she murmured. “I like the surprise. It’s the one from when you were young.” She unwound herself and picked it back up, touching a fingertip to Victor’s face. “Anyway, I thought there was going to be a movie?”
Victor smirked a little at her response. “Well I guess it’s a good thing I like your surprises then.” His eyes saddened for a moment, thinking of his childhood friend. Jakober had been his only friend at the Institute and every now and again they saw each other but things had turned out too differently for them. Victor’s eyes brightened then, “Of course.” He turned around with the remote in hand and turned the fairly big TV hanging on the wall in front of the couches on, quickly launching Netflix. “Care for anything to eat or drink darling?” he asked while he scrolled through Netflix.
“Just tell me where the popcorn is,” she replied, starting to wander through the doorway. “And try not to pick anything in the horror genre. I’d like to sleep tonight.”
“First hanging cabinet on the left, second shelf.” He continued to scroll through all of the movies for another moment, “Love? How ‘bout The Three Musketeers?”
Unwrapping the package, Summer called back, “That’s fine.” She stuffed it in the microwave and started the timer, then fished a soda out of the fridge. “Should I get you a drink?”
“No?” Her tone arced high with surprise and an edge of teasing. “And what, may I inquire, brings you to this decision?” She laughed at him, arch and a little cruel, and went on, “I know you, my Duke. You’ll not cleave to me for long, so I’ll have as much as I may before that time comes. Did you wish me to be blind to you?”
Humphrey stopped and looked at her with cold grey eyes. “You know nothing,” he hissed. “You know the gossip and rumors about me and my pasttime. I thought you might be fitting for something more meaningful, have I been mistaken? If so, then you are right. I shall not cleave you for much longer.”
“People change, and you just proved you have very little faith in me, my lady. Tis disappointing indeed.” He added with sadness in his voice.
“And how else should I know you? We met, we parted, we have met again.” Her voice cracked like a whip. “You expect faith of me, who has not yet earned it? I am not one to be won with pretty gifts or sweet words alone.” Summer stepped closer, laying her hand against Humphrey’s chest, and hissed, “You may make free with my body, and this is expected, and in time you may show change, and then will you truly win my heart.”
Oh, here’s fun! A fakey name for a fakey face. You watch all you like, honey; you don’t frighten me. I know what I am.
That’ll be a neat trick, since you’re too much of a coward to give your name.
I’ll give you a tip, since you seem to be new around here: giving me orders is like giving a cat orders. You might get the result you want, but only in my own time and my own way. And if I don’t like you? You’ll just get a faceful of claw.
Like Steve, I can do this all day.
Like Tony, there’s nothing you can say to me that I haven’t heard before.
Like Bruce, you won’t like me when I’m angry.
Like Thor, I fight my own battles.
Like Clint, my aim is purposeful.
Like Natasha, I’m more than I seem.
Like Phèdre, I’m not afraid of pain.
Come back when you can wear your own face, little one.
She traced her fingers lightly over the wood, feeling the grain of it under her fingertips, and picked up one of the pictures. “You look so fierce here,” she commented. Glancing up, she looked at the pile of kindling and wood Victor had assembled and flicked her fingers, adding a little spark to it. Then she put the photo down and crossed to loop her arms around his neck. “It’s much simpler if you let me do that,” she murmured, “Victor darling.”
Victor looked back at her to see what she was talking about but was momentarily surprised by her sparking the fire. “Hey-” He stopped then smiled down at her as she looped her arms around his neck. “I’m sorry, I’m just not used to seeing you use your talents Summer.” Victor rested his hands at her hips, rocking a little. “Which photo were you talking about love?”
“Don’t get used to it,” she murmured. “I like the surprise. It’s the one from when you were young.” She unwound herself and picked it back up, touching a fingertip to Victor’s face. “Anyway, I thought there was going to be a movie?”

“The gallantry is cute, darlin’,” Summer laughed as she climbed out. She huddled by the door until he’d opened the house, then ran inside, shivering a little. She had to stop just inside the door, though, and fumble for the light switch. When the light came up she gazed around, a slow smile uncurling across her face. “Victor, this is really nice. Much better than last time.”
He grinned, proud. There were a lot more of his souvenirs from his travels posted on the mantle and sitting on the coffee table in front of the couches. The furniture was dark cherry colour and while the wood gave the furniture an almost antique feeling there was something subtly modern about the house. The lighting only added to that. The high ceilings made it difficult to fully light the rooms and they were forever in a cozy dim setting and were only amplified by a handful of lamps. There were very few pictures scattered around the place. There was one of him from the Institute, taken of him and his friend when they were 12, as well as a few pictures from college.
“Thank you darling,” he said as he made to help her out of her jacket. He hung their jackets up and put his hat on a hook before striding over to the fire place, which was almost perpendicular to the couches. “I’m going to start a fire to help warm this place up, make yourself at home.”
“Yes, my lord,” she sighed, drawing away. It was probably fortunate that she’d done most of her undressing herself. It made it simple to locate her dress and relace it, though she wasn’t sure what had become of the blue velvet. “Do I suit your desires now, sweet?”
“Plainly speaking, no… you suited MY desires without the garment.” Humphrey said pulling her into a hug. He sensed a change of mood. “Sadly we need to care for other things than my desires… and mayhap we could talk as you feel as cold as wind in winter, so tell me what it is I may have insulted you? I meant no offence.”
Summer leaned her head against his chest, sighing softly. “I am not insulted, only disappointed. I wished more of you, and you put me off.” Deliberately, she looked up and smiled. “Come, kiss me again and we shall go into supper. We may talk, though not of insult.”
Humphrey kissed her obediently, and possibly longer than she intended because his mind was lost in its analysis of her wanting more of him. Once out his chamber, he asked her. “What would you mean by more of me, thought you had enough of me… for a little time. Thought you hesitated to stay. I had no intention to put you off.”
“No?” Her tone arced high with surprise and an edge of teasing. “And what, may I inquire, brings you to this decision?” She laughed at him, arch and a little cruel, and went on, “I know you, my Duke. Well, so much for that hope. Some days I wonder why I keep roleplaying at all around here.
