It took her a second to notice what Clint was doing. She supposed she’d gotten used to being around people who had no notion of personal space. She lifted her eyes to meet his, then glanced down at his mouth, and back up. It felt a bit like one of those wire-taut moments in movies, will they-won’t they?

Summer gritted her teeth, swallowing hard. “I won’t let SHIELD run my life, Clint,” she said. Low, but she knew he could hear her.
He could always hear her.
“I have to be free to make my own choices.” She knew what his orders were. They were written on the tip of the arrow he held pointed at her heart, in his eyes fixed on her face, in the utter stillness of his face.
“I have to be free.”
She didn’t stay to watch her fire consume him. The sky swallowed her up, wingless and shadowed.
