“To the stables. There will be empty stalls and it won’t be too loud or obvious.” Summer didn’t stop to think about how she had basically just ordered Arthur around. “I’ll go get Gaius.”

Arthur ignored that fact of being bossed around to keep the knight they have protected and a secret. “Get him quickly, we don’t need anything bad to happen.” He quickly led the knight to the stables and gently placed him down on the big bed of hay.

Summer felt like it took entirely too long to persuade Gaius to come out of his rooms and down to the stables. He kept saying, “Well, why can’t you bring him up here?” and “Surely this doesn’t need to be such a secret,” until finally she hissed at him, “There may be magic involved.” At which point he raised both eyebrows, closed his mouth, and followed her back down the stairs.

Meanwhile, the knight continued to mumble incoherently, sweat sticking his golden hair to his brow. He groped at his side for his sword, but didn’t seem to be truly aware of his surroundings.

“I already regret this.”

They were almost back to Camelot when the strange knight began to rouse. He didn’t move much, but his head tossed where it was leaned back on her shoulder, and he mumbled feverish nonsense. Summer called up to Arthur, “We should hurry. He’s waking, and I don’t know what will happen.”

Arthur heard her words and nudged his foot into his horse’s side a bit, moving them faster so that they could reach Camelot quickly. Once within its walls, he dismounted his horse and turned to Summer. “Alright, now that we’re here, we need to go take care of him and bring him to Gaius.”

She nearly rolled her eyes at him. “I’m going to need your help here,” she pointed out. “Are we trying to keep this secretive, or let just anyone see? Because I don’t think even you can carry him to Gaius’ chambers.” Never mind the fact that the knight was definitely waking up now, and he was unlikely to respond well to being in a strange place and handled by strange folk.

Especially after he begged them to kill him.

He came over, getting the knight off of the horse and kept an arm around the fallen knight. “Well then where is the closest place we can hide him until we get him to Gaius? We have to keep him out of sight so he doesn’t get hurt but in order to have someone see him. Hide him and get Gaius then our best option?”

It wasn’t nearly the gracious concession she wanted, but she let it pass. “Yes, sire.” She gave the wounded knight one last pat on the chest, then rose and mounted her horse. “If you can lift him across the saddle, I can support him. We need to stop wasting time.”

Arthur didn’t say anything to her comment but easily pushed forward. He helped to lift the man onto her horse, climbing back to his own horse and began to get the horse to trot. They were going to have to go carefully, if they wanted to get back to Camelot safely.

Once Arthur was ahead of her, Summer let her reins fall to the mare’s neck, relying on her knees for control and her hands to balance the knight. She really didn’t want to be taking him back to Camelot; his words troubled her and she couldn’t shake the conviction that trouble rode inside that helm. But Arthur was her lord; she had to obey.

He could tell that something was still off about this knight and knew magic had to be the source of it. He didn’t know how to talk about it however. Magic was always looked at badly by his father and those practicing it killed. He knew he’d have to get him to Gaius and to keep things very quiet.

“Perhaps, but what concerns me is that he wakes up while with you and spooks the horse. I can handle it well if something should happen.”

“I trained my mare myself,” Summer said. “She won’t spook at anything.” Neglecting to mention that someone with command of fire magic needs a calm horse, and that even without that she could keep the horse from causing trouble with her other magic. “I really think we should put him on my mare and I’ll ride with you.”

“This is an argument that isn’t worth continuing. I trust you on your judgement and you can have him, but the minute… if he wakes up or anything and tries any funny business, let me know so I can do something about it.”

“We can’t give up on him, he’s strong. I know that he will make it and we’ll get him to Camelot and Gaius.” Arthur spoke with conviction. “I fear that what he means is that what is happening will continue on and on. Never ending and never stopping. Like a curse. I wonder if Gaius would know any way to break such a thing.”

She couldn’t help glancing up at Arthur, startled. He had picked it apart so easily, from just the one phrase. “Do you think that’s why he wanted you to kill him?” She held that thought for a moment, concentrating on winding the strips around the sounded torso — “Lift, a little, please, yes, just there.” — before finishing it. “Is that the way to break it? Someone has to — has to — “

Arthur gave a faint nod of his head, “This reminds me about a black knight that came to the kingdom, any stabbing with a sword didn’t kill him since he was magically brought back and it’s a long story. But it could make a lot of sense,” he mused before glancing over at Summer. “Gaius? Maybe he can help us.”

“Well,” she said, looking over her handiwork, “he’s unconscious now, so I guess if we tie him to the back of my horse and hurry?” She was really uneasy about the idea of moving someone so badly wounded, but if he was cursed — and they couldn’t do anything more for him here.

“I already regret this.”

“Oh good,” Summer said half-absently. She held out her hands, not even looking up, and quickly cut the tunic along the seams with a little pocket knife. Soaking half in the water, she wiped away as much of the blood as she could, then looked back up at Arthur with compressed lips. “I don’t think he’ll make it back to town, and …. well, look.” The wound was clearly very bad. Without expert help, the knight would probably die in a few days. She cut the rest of the tunic into strips, but she couldn’t help feeling it was a hopeless task. “What did he mean by ‘it will begin again’?”
