“The Winter … ” she repeated slowly. “Oh! Oh, of course. Yes, I’d love to go with you.” She grinned at him. “I was worried it was something awful, Isaac!”

His entire face lit up with a blinding smile. “Really? And…it could be something awful — we have to dress up and go dancing,” he pouted then and folded his arms across his chest.

“I like dressing up! Besides, I didn’t really get to go to a lot of dances when I was your age. It’ll be fun, Isaac! Dancing isn’t hard.” Leaning over the arm of the couch, she reached out a hand to him. “You worry too much!”

By about the third hesitation, Summer was kneeling on the couch, watching him with a perplexed expression. “Isaac, what in the world are you talking about? Go where?”

Trying to calm down his panicked babbling, Isaac took a deep breath and licked at his lips, forcing himself to maintain eye contact. “I…the, um, the Winter Formal.”

“The Winter … ” she repeated slowly. “Oh! Oh, of course. Yes, I’d love to go with you.” She grinned at him. “I was worried it was something awful, Isaac!”

Helios lifted himself up on his back legs to push at Isaac’s hand, purring loudly. “What is it?” Making an exaggerated ‘oof’ noise, she took his backpack and carried it over to the couch to join her pile of classwork. “Do you need my help with a paper again?”

Picking Helios up without a second thought, Isaac cradled him to his chest and followed after her, looking increasingly more nervous as he ducked his head. “No. I, um…well, it’s…you could be busy and that’s fine, it’s not that big a deal, maybe for girls but I kind of…I do want to go but only if you do and well…I’m making a mess of this…” he babbled quickly, distracting himself by scratching behind Helios’ ear once again.

Summer opened the door, smiling up at him and preventing Helios’ precipitate exit with one foot. “Hey, babe! How was school?” She pulled him inside, giving an exaggerated shiver, and stretched up for a kiss.

Leaning into the kiss and smiling widely at the much welcomed distraction, he slipped his way inside and reached down to scratch behind Helios’ ear. “It was alright. I…um…wanted to ask you something, actually?”

Of all people, it was Jackson who slapped Isaac’s shoulder after lacrosse practise, muttering encouragement. Danny tipped him a wink, though, and Stiles was all but pushing him out the school doors as soon as they finished changing out.

Scott was oblivious, too absorbed in asking Kira to the dance no doubt. Although he might be mentioning Isaac’s dilemma to her, for she cast the curly werewolf a very knowing kind of glance over Scott’s shoulder. It was probably fortunate that none of the /other/ girls in the pack seemed to know.

Lydia’s advice might have been overwhelming for the shy boy.

Managing not to flinch violently at the other male’s unexpected contact, Isaac graced him with a brief smile and a faint nod, before turning on his heel and heading out of the lockers after showering and changing. Ensuring that he had his backpack hoisted up securely on his shoulder, he exhaled a deep breath and smiled at the others watching him intently.

Oblivious to everything else around him, Isaac had one though swirling constantly in his mind, and heading toward the parking lot, he jumped in the passenger seat of Stiles’s Jeep, distracted from the boy’s usual chattering. Before he knew it, he was outside Summer’s home, and he licked at his lips, before entering the building and knocking on the door.

Summer opened the door, smiling up at him and preventing Helios’ precipitate exit with one foot. “Hey, babe! How was school?” She pulled him inside, giving an exaggerated shiver, and stretched up for a kiss.

“/You/ have a girlfriend. You’ve had a girlfriend for months. A secret girlfriend.” Jackson, in his shock, was repeating himself. Obviously amused, Danny let him ramble on, a glint in his eyes as he looked at Isaac.

“She’s not gonna say no, man.” The expression on his face shifted, subtly, eyes darkening, as he added, “She’d be crazy to say no to that.”

“Danny, I thought /I/ was attractive to you!” Stiles whined, and most of the tension shattered in laughter at Stiles’ deliberate expense.

And on a sudden spur of spontaneity, Isaac smirked, and if that crooked little smile wasn’t as powerful as it usually was, well, no-one called him out on it, at any rate. “Yeah, guess I’m not as much as a freak as you thought I was, huh, Jackson?”

But turning to Danny then, he hesitated and bit down on his bottom lip, not registering the shift in Danny’s expression before he slowly nodded. “I guess I’ll take your word for it, but thanks, Danny. That means a lot.”

And just like that, everyone was laughing again, Stiles the target for the hilarity as Isaac lost himself in his own mind. He vowed to talk to Summer after classes had ended that day, and hopefully by that point, he’d have mustered up the courage not to stammer aloud his request.

Stiles reached out and whacked Jackson on the back of the head, and the blond whipped around to glare. “Come off it, Jackson,” Danny cut in. “Isaac, you’ve been going out for months. Why would she say no?”

“He what?” Jackson whipped back around — if he wasn’t a werewolf he’d be dizzy as hell — and stared at Isaac. “Who? Who are you dating?” His shock carried him right into Isaac’s space. “Wait a minute! Is this that girl that you were freaking out about that one full moon?”

“Because…” Because I’m me, because she’s Summer, because I’m me ran like a discomforting mantra in his head, and because words were failing him yet again, he simply shrugged helplessly, too distressed to be amused at Jackson’s amazement.

Or, at least he didn’t fully register Jackson’s reacting until the other male was right in front of him, and he nodded reluctantly, hunching down to make himself appear as small as possible, quite a feat for someone of his height. “That’s Summer.”

Scott gave Isaac a funny look when the curly werewolf abruptly buried himself in his locker. “There’s a girl you want to ask? That’s awesome!” he bubbled. “Uh, I guess you just — do it.”

“Real helpful, Scott,” Stiles remarked. The room filled with boy-changing noises for a moment before Jackson came around the lockers, arms folded and frowning.

“What is taking so long?”

“Isaac’s having a crisis,” Stiles said helpfully. “He wants to ask a girl to the dance and doesn’t know how.”

Jackson scoffed. “What girl would agree? He doesn’t even like to be touched.”

“Just do it?” he echoed doubtfully, furrowing his eyebrows together as he twirled to regard Scott. That was easy for the other boy to say — Captain of the Lacrosse team, a good-looking, kind-hearted guy who hadn’t been beaten to a pulp for years — he would have no problem getting a date for the winter formal.

He was about to say this aloud, when Jackson intervened and Isaac’s expression darkened. Maybe the other male was right — she wouldn’t want to go with him, would she? He could ask, but he doubted she’d agree. He wasn’t particularly good in a social setting as he was terrified of ruining their relationship.

Stiles reached out and whacked Jackson on the back of the head, and the blond whipped around to glare. “Come off it, Jackson,” Danny cut in. “Isaac, you’ve been going out for months. Why would she say no?”

Stiles stared at the paper announcing the date of the winter formal, rubbing at the back of his neck. Breezing past with Isaac, Scott stopped to look at it too, eyebrows lifting slightly. “You think Malia will want to go?”

“Oh, yeah,” Stiles replied, still rubbing at the back of his neck. “Just, you know, last year was … ” He shrugged, leaving the words hanging.

“Yeah,” Scott repeated. They stood there, staring at the page and lost in their own thoughts, until Jackson stuck his head through the locker room door and shouted at them.

Isaac hovered behind Scott, listening to the conversation but not interjecting, torn between crippling nerves and excitement at the approaching dance. How on earth was he supposed to ask Summer to the dance? Not only was she a college girl, but it would just reinforce their age gap — which wasn’t important to him, not at all — but it was situations like this in which he was painfully reminded of it, and how their relationship might be perceived by those around him.

Unaware that he had in fact voiced this aloud for a brief moment, he flinched as he noted the others turning to face him, and he rubbed at the back of his neck, making a show of rummaging in his locker for some lost item.
