“Ooh, flattery will get you everywhere.” Summer winked. “It’s a good thing I’m in here alone, my ego will need the space if you keep that up.” She gestured to the loveseat. “You’re welcome to hang around, I wasn’t doing anything important. Do you sing?”

Tony felt like laughing at her blatant suggestive words just then, not at all taking them seriously, to his surprise. But he played along nonetheless and kept his laughs aside; he wasn’t exactly very keen to think hard about why he didn’t feel at ease with it all of the sudden. With a smile, he responded, “Yeah? That easy?”

He proceeded to follow her suggestion, taking a seat right beside her, and not thought it wasn’t needed to say anything about her ego comment. He felt the need to tell her about his but he decided he’d let her see that for herself. Keep it as a surprise for later; people liked that, didn’t they? “Hm, yeah. Used to be in a choir, to be honest. Girls’ choir. They were quite welcoming and open to have me there.

Summer didn’t bother to respond to his first comment with anything other than a slightly bent smile. Let him think what he liked; he didn’t mean it seriously, which meant it wasn’t worth pursuing. A bit of a shame, really. Celibacy wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

“Liked your soprano, did they?” He was pretty clearly trying to shock her, get some kind of reaction; two could play at that game. Looking him over, she added, “I assume that wasn’t that long ago.”

“Wha — Oh!” Summer blundered to a stop in the middle of the chorus, laughing at herself and turning round. One hand punched the power button on the speakers hastily, so they could hear themselves talk. “Well, thank you. It’s been a long time since I had any training; I just like to sing.” She stood up, offering a hand. “I’m Summer. I guess since you’re here, I must be disturbing everyone on the floor?”

Tony’s slight smile turned into a full-on grin when the girl finally noticed him and he took a step forward, letting himself into her apartment as if he had any right to be in there. “I can see that,” he offered, surprising himself when he found that he genuinely meant it. “Tony,” he said then and shook the proffered hand, “Not exactly a disturbance when you’re not half-bad, yeah? More like a free concert, really. And I was just bored, so I figured I should check where that was coming from.”

” — well, no, you don’t really get to know who your neighbours are before you move in, Sam!” Summer laughs. “But I lucked out. I seem to have landed in a whole group of kindred spirits, it’s just a shame most of them are already paired off to each other. Seriously, it’s like incest or something.”

The people on the other side of the voice chat speak, and she grins and laughs again. “Fine, fine, I won’t use that word. But there are a lot of cute people here and I can’t touch! Merlin and Mordred are together, and let me tell you, I would be in that sandwich in a heartbeat. /Doc/ would be in that sandwich. I’m pretty sure Tony and Xavier are going out, too.” She sighs. “Yeah, I know, but there is one straight couple! … are you serious? I would go out with any of them in a heartbeat. Aithusa, Arthur — maybe not Sherlock. I’m not sure Sherlock has a libido.”

~o “This is it, boys, this is war – what are we waiting for?
Why don’t we break the rules already?
I was never one to believe the hype
Save that for the black and white
I try twice as hard and I’m half as liked,
But here they come again to jack my style.” ~o

Singing at the top of her theatrically-trained lungs, with the music almost as loud as she is.

“—You’re rather good.” he commented from where he stood just near her doorway, smiling to himself rather than at her. Surely he wasn’t being intrusive; it wasn’t his fault she left the door slightly ajar nor was it his fault that her voice resonated throughout the whole floor. It was a wonder he was the first to come here, to be honest.

Singing at the top of her theatrically-trained lungs, with the music almost as loud as she is.

Summer put her hands on her hips and surveyed the room. False spiderwebbing in all the corners, little dishes of snacks and nibbles on every table, orange, purple and white fairy lights strung about in place of the lamps, faintly spooky or hallowe’en music cued up on the computer … yes, it looked like everything was ready.

She put a hand to her chest, willing her heartbeat to slow down. Even if no one came, she had done good unpacking and cleaning and arranging everything, so it wasn’t a total waste. Doc sat by the door, pale-tipped tail wrapped around her feet, looking for all the world like she was ready to greet any guests instead of go darting off the moment some stranger came in.

Summer smiled and tightened the laces on her leather coat once more. Scooping up the little calico, she unlocked the door and opened it just an inviting touch.

Summer taped a note to each door on the hall.

Hallowe’en Party!
Come to [flat number] and meet your new neighbor!
Saturday, 8pm BYOB

She’d probably spend the night alone, twitching at every sound, and eat all the snacks out of nervousness, but hell, it was worth a try. And maybe the cute blond guy from a couple doors down would turn up. He’d seemed nice enough.

Summer glared after the departing van, then eyed her boxes, piled on the sidewalk. Fine. Fine; she’d just — go inside and ask her new neighbors for help. Squaring her shoulders, she marched to the first door she saw and knocked. “Uh, hi?” she said to the person who opened it. “I’m your new neighbor, and I have a huge favor to ask.”

Arthur looked at her, raising an eyebrow – great. Just another factor to the madness they called their floor. He sighed, forcing a smile.
